Profile by Tony Scholes

Mike Pollitt's stay at Burnley was somewhat short lived. Arriving on an initial month's loan, suggesting it could well be extended beyond that first month, he was called back by Wigan before the month was complete.

Despite starting his career with Manchester United he had to wait sixteen years before finally getting into the top league. He didn't ever feature in his first club's first team and moved around on loan and mainly free transfers for a number of years. The two clubs to play money for him were Notts County and Sunderland, but he didn't play a game for either of those two clubs.

In the summer of 1998 he signed for Rotherham and for the next seven years was first choice goalkeeper at his club. All but one of those seasons was at Millmoor, he spent the 2000/01 season at Chesterfield before rejoining Ronnie Moore's side.

He was the first choice goalkeeper throughout Rotherham's four years in what is now the Championship and after relegation he moved on to Wigan who had just won promotion to the Premiership. He was only signed as cover but won his place in the side and played around two thirds of their league games in 2005/06 season as well as playing in the side that reached the Carling Cup Final.

The 2006/07 season however has brought just one Premiership appearance following the signing of Chris Kirkland, and that as a substitute for the injured new keeper. He went to Ipswich on loan, but was recalled after just one game, and then joined the Clarets.

He kept a clean sheet on his debut at Southampton, in a side that saw Eric Djemba-Djemba also make a debut and Ade Akinbiyi play his first league game for us on his return. Ten days later he was voted by Clarets Mad as the Man of the Match in what proved to be his only home game for the Clarets against Stoke.

That game ended in defeat, as did his next two games at Derby and QPR and then, as he was preparing for our home game against Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan recalled him as cover for their game at Arsenal where he didn't make the bench.

Pollitt remains at Wigan and he signed a new deal in the summer of 2011 for one year and then in 2012 agreed another deal for a further year.

He remained as a player at Wigan until June 2014 before being appointed as the club's goalkeeping coach, replacing Phil Hughes with whom he'd worked at Burnley.
