Profile by Andy Ashworth

Now Norwegian is not exactly my 2nd language so finding out about Mr Kval was not the easiest task.

Kval was a young keeper on the books of Brann Bergen - his home town club. Brann had two senior keepers in place when he came through the ranks and so finding his chances limited he was loaned out the lower division side Fana on a multi season deal.

As he turned 24 he was handed a trial at Burnley by Stan Ternent, who had been given good reports about the highly rated keeper's time at Fana.

The Brann management were aware of the expiring contract of Kval and were hoping that the Clarets would make a cash offer due to our goalkeeping situation at the time. However, Stan wanted to see Kval in match action and Brann blocked his involvement in a friendly match. When his contract with the Norwegian side expired he was awarded a deal until the end of the 1998/99 season.

Kval fully expected to play nothing but reserve team football as he adapted to the rigours of the English game. He was however given a chance in the 1st team in the FA Cup as we played Darlington at Middlesborough's new Riverside Stadium.

We were 2-0 up in the game and Payts saw red. Kval conceded 3 in the last 10 minutes and was never seen in the 1ts team again. The end of the season saw his release and he returned home to play for Lov-Ham IL.
