Wolves are here again

The Clarets won at Bury whilst Wolves won through 4-2 in a televised match at Rochdale but they were fortunate and had to come from two behind.

That was during a less than certain start to the season for the club relegated from the Premiership and yet they have still only been beaten twice, to Stoke and Ipswich two sides currently in 3rd and 4th place.

Dave Jones has had one further dip into the transfer market since that league meeting – later that week he signed South Korean striker Seol Ki-Hyun from Belgian club Anderlecht.

The player, capped forty times by his country, cost Wolves £2 million. He has played in their last three games but is still looking for his first goal for his new club.

Last week was a good one for them and they won twice on their travels on what was something like a south coast tour. Last Tuesday a Kenny Miller goal was enough to give them a 1-0 win at Brighton whilst on Saturday a Carl Cort penalty and a late goal from Dean Sturridge saw them recover from a goal down to win 2-1 at Plymouth.

That’s lifted them to 15th in the table, just one place below the Clarets on goal difference.

The team that Wolves turned out in those two games will be much changed for tonight’s game. Dean Sturridge, Joleon Lescott and leading scorer Kenny Miller are all receiving treatment for knocks and are likely to sit this one out.

Kevin Cooper was sent off at Plymouth and so will start his suspension tonight and Jones is expected to leave out other experienced players in order to give them a rest ahead of the league match at the weekend.

Players such as goalkeeper Michael Oakes, Keith Andrews, Colin Cameron and Joachim Bjorkland are all expected to be involved whilst Jones will also include youngsters Leon Clarke, Keith Lowe, Sammy Clingan and Lewis Gobern in the squad.

They are expected to select from:

Paul Jones, Mark Clyde, Jody Craddock, Lee Naylor, Shaun Newton, Paul Ince, Seyi Olofinjana, Seol Ki-Hyun, Carl Cort, Keith Andrews, Michael Oakes, Colin Cameron, Joachim Bjorkland, Leon Clarke, Keith Lowe, Sammy Clingan, Lewis Gobern.

Steve Cotterill has suggested that there will be changes but these will have to be kept to a minimum because of the small number of players available to him.

The good news is that there are no further injuries which means only Lee Roche is ruled out whilst Micah Hyde returns to the squad after completing his three match ban.

It doesn’t look as though the Italians of got off their backsides yet and sent the international clearance for Amadou Sanokho and that will mean him sitting out his fourth game whilst waiting for the Italian FA.

That really means the only change to the squad from Saturday will be the addition of Hyde and so it remains to be seen who sits this one out should the former Watford midfielder go straight back into the side.

Burnley
will select from:

Danny Coyne, Michael Duff, Frank Sinclair, John McGreal, Mo Camara, Ian Moore, Richard Chaplow, Tony Grant, Graham Branch, Jean-Louis Valois, Robbie Blake, Micah Hyde, Brian Jensen, Ryan Townsend, Joel Pilkington, Mark Yates, Matt O’Neill.

It was Wolves who knocked us out of this competition last season in the 3rd round after we had won at Chesterfield and Scunthorpe, but the last time they played a league Cup tie at Turf Moor was in 1979.

It was the first time the 2nd round had been played over two legs and the Clarets went out 3-1 on aggregate. Martin Dobson scored for the Clarets in a 1-1 draw at home with Geoff Palmer, later to play for Burnley, getting the Wolves goal. We lost the second leg 2-0, the goals coming from Kenny Hibbitt and Palmer again.

The teams at Turf Moor were,

Burnley: Alan Stevenson, Derek Scott, Ian Brennan, Peter Noble, Jim Thomson, Billy Rodaway, Billy Ingham, Martin Dobson, Joe Jakub, Steve Kindon, Leighton James.

Wolves: Paul Bradshaw, Geoff Palmer, Derek Parkin, Peter Daniel, Emlyn Hughes, George Berry, Kenny Hibbitt, Willie Carr, Billy Rafferty, Wayne Clarke, Martin Patching.
