Same old Colin

They were the first to kick off with Sky moving them forward to the lunchtime slot and they went on to beat Leicester 4-1 although three of the goals did come in the last nine minutes of the game.

As always, Warnock has been busy in the transfer market over the summer with no fewer than nine new players arriving at Bramall Lane, and five of them featured in that opening day win against Leicester.

French midfielder Lilian Nalis, who was signed from Leicester, joined Paul Ifill and Danny Webber, signed from Millwall and Watford, respectively, in the starting line up on Saturday whilst Keith Gillespie (also from Leicester) and Neil Shipperley (from Palace) both came on from the subs bench.

Apart from those five he’s also brought in Blackburn central defender Craig Short, Irish forward Gary Mulligan from Wolves, Aston Villa’s Karl Nix and San Lee from Brentford to boost an already big squad.

There have been some departures including strikers Tommy Johnson and Danny Cadamarteri who have gone to Scunthorpe and Bradford whilst the list of players released includes such as Peter Ndlovu and Ashley Ward.

They have been involved in some transfer speculation this week with Preston announcing that they had turned down a Sheffield United offer for striker Richard Cresswell whilst Warnock revealed that Andy Gray was close to a move to Premiership new boys Sunderland. Gray though is still at Bramall Lane and there is no sign of Cresswell leaving Deepdale.

Team News

Although Chris Morgan picked up a facial injury on Saturday it has proved to be nothing more than superficial and he’ll be in the starting line up for the Blades tonight.

In fact, they have already revealed it will be same again and it is expected the same five substitutes will also be on the bench.

That being the case Sheffield United will line up: Paddy Kenny, Leigh Bromby, Chris Morgan, Phil Jagielka, Jon Harley, Paul Ifill, Nick Montgomery, Lilian Nalis, Michael Tonge, Andy Gray, Danny Webber. Subs: Rob Kozluk, Alan Quinn, Keith Gillespie, Steve Kabba, Neil Shipperley.

The major worry for Steve Cotterill is John McGreal who, like Morgan, suffered a facial injury on Saturday. A fractured cheek bone was feared but thankfully it is not that serious and he should play tonight.

Michael Duff is expected to be on the bench again despite not being fit but there’s good news concerning Danny Karbassiyoon. He’ll hopefully be able to resume training this week.

Burnley’s team is expected to be: Danny Coyne, Frank Sinclair, Wayne Thomas, John McGreal, Graham Branch, Wade Elliott, Micah Hyde, James O’Connor, Garreth O’Connor, Ade Akinbiyi, Gifton Noel-Williams. Subs: Brian Jensen, Michael Duff, Mark Yates, Chris McCann, Kyle Lafferty.

Last Time

It’s just a year ago on the opening day of the season and the two teams took a point each from a 1-1 draw as the Football League got underway in typically hot weather.

We probably had the better of the first half and were worth the lead given to us by Micah Hyde, scoring on his league debut for the Clarets, but Sheffield United came back at us in the second half to equalise from a twice taken throw in.

There was much to admire from the new look Clarets, particularly defensively where the Frank Sinclair/John McGreal partnership looked outstanding in front of Danny Coyne who looked in top form.

Steve Cotterill admitted that we rode our luck at times during the second half and thought to get a draw was a good result.

The teams were,

Burnley: Danny Coyne, Michael Duff, Frank Sinclair, John McGreal, Mo Camara, Richard Chaplow, Tony Grant (Lee Roche 83), Micah Hyde, Graham Branch, Robbie Blake, Ian Moore. Subs not used: Brian Jensen, Matt O’Neill, Joel Pilkington, Ryan Townsend.

Sheffield United: Paddy Kenny, Leigh Bromby, Chris Morgan, Phil Jagielka, Alan Wright, Andy Liddell (Jonathan Forte 78), Jon Harley, Nick Montgomery, Michael Tonge, Barry Hayles (Ashley Ward 67), Andy Gray. Subs not used: Alan Quinn, Stuart McCall, Ian Ross.
