Our week away from home starts here

Derby were down in 16th place in the league, four places below us, when they came to the Turf in October and beat us 2-0 in front of the television cameras on a pitch that was hardly fit for play.

That was considerably better than the sort of form they had shown during the previous season when they were even more fortunate than ourselves to avoid relegation to what is now League One.

That signalled a rise up the table that has taken them into fourth place and it has to a large extent been based on their form away form home. Including that Turf Moor win Derby have won eight, drawn one and lost just one of their last ten away games, the only away defeat coming at Preston.

Home form is not so good though and the recent 2-0 win against Leeds ended a run of three successive home defeats.

On away results alone they lead the table with 32 points from 17 games, at home it is a different story and their 22 points from 16 games sees them languishing well down in the bottom half of the table.

Manager George Burley has made some good signings with Inigo Idiakez and Grzegorz Rasiak proving to be two exception additions to the squad. Both played at Burnley and since then Burley has brought in just one new player and that’s full back Chris Makin who made his debut at the weekend in their 3-1 win at Rotherham.

Burley has played down the suggestions of them reaching the play offs all season but is now admitting that it is a real possibility. It’s so tight in that group though that defeat tonight would see them drop below West Ham and depending on what happens down the road at Forest where Preston play they could find themselves sixth.

There’s a big gap between them and the top three and they are currently nine points behind third place Sunderland.

They do have some injury problems and Tommy Smith is ruled out after being forced off in that win at Rotherham. Good news though is that Marco Reich returned from injury in that game, coming on as a substitute.

Paul Boertien and Michael Johnson are also out injured whilst Ian Taylor will be serving the last match of his three match suspension following a ridiculous sending off at Brighton.

Derby will select from: Lee Camp, Chris Makin, Jeff Kenna, Pablo Mills, Tom Huddlestone, Morten Bisgaard, Marco Reich, Adam Bolder, Marcus Tudgay, Grzegorz Rasiak, Inigo Idiakez, Lee Grant, Junior, Paul Peschisolido, Mo Konjic, Richard Jackson.

There are problems for Steve Cotterill who will certainly be without Frank Sinclair and very likely there will be no John McGreal either.

Frank suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday and will be out for at least two weeks whilst McGreal injured his back and should be available for the cup replay if not before.

Thankfully, no other injuries have been reported but with Matt O’Neill out on loan at Accrington it could mean a place back on the bench for Mark Yates.

Our expected line up is: Brian Jensen, Lee Roche, Michael Duff, Gary Cahill, Mo Camara, John Oster, Micah Hyde, Tony Grant, Pete Whittingham, Jean-Louis Valois, Ian Moore. Subs: Danny Coyne, Joel Pilkington, Paul Scott, Mark Yates, Graham Branch.

The last time we were at Derby was one of those very forgettable performances from last season. I described it as inept at the time, I was unaware that we were going to get performances such as Millwall, Coventry, Cardiff and Rotherham later in the season.

We were behind after twenty minutes to a Lee Morris goal and the scoring was complete at 2-0 in stoppage time when Morris took a dive in the box and won a penalty from a very poor decision by Uriah Rennie.

Burnley manager Stan Ternent described the performance as shit in the after match press conference. He obviously didn’t know it was going to get worse either.

The teams were,

Derby: Lee Grant, Richard Jackson, Michael Johnson, Youl Mawene (Pablo Mills 37), Peter Kennedy, Candido Costa (Simo Valakari 86), Tom Huddlestone, Ian Taylor, Lee Holmes (Paul Boertien 69), Lee Morris, Danny Dichio. Subs not used: Marcus Tudgay, Lee Camp.

Burnley: Brian Jensen, Dean West (Lee Roche 75), David May, Arthur Gnohere, Mo Camara, Glen Little, Richard Chaplow, Tony Grant, Gareth Farrelly (Graham Branch 57), Robbie Blake, Ian Moore. Subs not used: Mark McGregor, Joel Pilkington, Matt O’Neill.
