On the road for the last time this season

Last updated : 26 April 2013 By Tony Scholes

It seems a long time since the midweek game at Middlesbrough four our first away game. We'd beaten Bolton three days earlier at home on the opening day and led in this game for a minute before eventually losing 3-2.

It's certainly not been another 2011/12 season in terms of away wins. There have been just six to date and they've come under three managers. We beat Derby before Eddie Howe left, won at Bristol City with Terry Pashley in caretaker charge, and have won four times on the road under Sean Dyche, at Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall and Charlton.

Overall, our record away under Dyche hadn't been bad at all, but we've not won any of the last four since the 1-0 victory at Charlton.

Biggest game of the season says Danny Ings

I think we'd all hoped we'd go into this last game with something to play for but we'd have certainly wanted it to be at the other end of the table. When we came away from Millwall with a 2-0 win in January that looked a possibility as we moved into seventh place, but a horrible run since means we still have points to go for to ensure we don't suffer relegation.

How much will David Edgar's late equaliser last week help? It's left us on 55 points and that's more than any team have even been relegated with from any division. The record in our division for a relegated team is 52 points but in 1988/89 Southend were relegated from the third tier with 54 points in a league where four clubs were relegated.

That means we'd be safe in an ordinary season but at least now we know that should we win one of or remaining games then it matters not what any other side do. That would ensure safety.

As it stands right now, we are safe provided two of Peterborough, our opponents tomorrow Wolves, and Barnsley don't win both of their remaining games.

Striker Danny Ings, who was recalled last week is aware of how big a game it is. He said: "It's a massive game. We have to go out there with clear minds and hopefully get the win. That's the aim, to go there and hopefully get the three points and I'm sure we can do that.

"It will be the biggest game of the season for us and we've definitely got to put a good performance in and get the three points. They are in more desperate need than we are but if we lose the game we are in as much trouble so it is important that we go there and get the three points."

Ben Mee, who was ruled out last week after suffering an injury at Leeds, is likely to be out of the reckoning again but Sean Dyche has been given a boost with the potential return of Michael Duff who hasn't featured because of a calf injury since the draw at Blackburn.

Duff's influence on the team can't be underestimated. He's started exactly half of the league games this season and in those games we've won 34 points. In the 22 games he hasn't started we've won just 21 points.

I think, should Duff be fully fit, he could come straight back in at the expense of Kevin Long and elsewhere the only changes will perhaps centre on Ross Wallace and Junior Stanislas who were both substituted at half time last week.

We'll select from: Lee Grant, Kieran Trippier, Kevin Long, Jason Shackell, Danny Lafferty, Ross Wallace, Dean Marney, Chris McCann, Junior Stanislas, Danny Ings, Sam Vokes, Brian Jensen, Luke O'Neill, Michael Duff, Joseph Mills, David Edgar, Brian Stock, Marvin Bartley, Keith Treacy, Martin Paterson.

Four years ago Wolves were winning the Championship and we followed them into the Premier League a few weeks later. They stayed for three years before dropping down a year ago just weeks after they sacked manager Mick McCarthy.

They were favourites for an immediate return. They started well enough and were fifth  in mid October, but when the Clarets beat them 2-0 in Dyche's first game in charge, it took them down to ninth in the league.

It was the start of a run that saw them win just one point in six games but even so it was February before they dropped into the relegation area. Just before that, in early January, they sacked manager Ståle Solbakken and replaced him with Doncaster boss Dean Saunders.

I don't think anyone could have thought they'd be trying to fight off a second relegation but that's the position they are in knowing that they are going to have to find a minimum of one win from their two remaining games and even that might not be enough.

To try and give his side a boost, Saunders could take a risk on Bakary Sako. He looked a good player when he played at Turf Moor last November but has been out for five weeks with a torn hamstring.

He cost them £3 million and is the player who can produce a goal from nothing. Saunders considers it a risk worth taking and said: "He can sprint and he'll be available for Saturday. We are rushing him back, so we will see how he trains tomorrow and Friday.

"Is it a risk? Yes. He's ahead of schedule but we've got no choice. We're short of goalscorers, someone who can score out of nothing, and if he smacks on in, or scores from a free kick, it might be just what we need."

He'll be added to last week's squad and Wolves will select from: 31. Dorus De Vries, 21. Kaspars Gorkss, 11. Stephen Ward, 20. Jack Robinson, 14. Roger Johnson, 30. Matt Doherty, 8. Karl Henry, 28. Tongo Doumbia, 12. Stephen Hunt, 29. Kevin Doyle, 15. Bjorn Sigurdarson, 32. Kevin Foley, 36. Aaron McCarey, 35. Jake Cassidy, 23. Nouha Dicko, 49. Liam McAlinden, 25. Danny Batth, 19. Adam Hammill, 10. Bakary Sako.

Last Time We Were There

Burnley's last visit to Molineux was in December 2009, the day that Mick McCarthy laughed when Owen Coyle told him what our budget was.

Andre Bikey went up front

We went into the game having won just one point from our first eight away games in the Premier League and we weren't able to add to it here.

We'd played so well in the midweek home game against Arsenal, while Wolves were playing a shadow squad at Manchester United, but we couldn't come close to matching that in this game and turned in a disappointing performance. We didn't come to life until we'd gone 2-0 behind early in the second half.

It was an awful opening to the game but Wolves got their noses in front on 15 minutes after a mistake by Clarke Carlisle. Even so, Matt Jarvis shot straight at Brian Jensen who palmed it out straight to Nenad Milijas who made no mistake.

There was no threat of an equaliser in the first half and Coyle opted to play Andre Bikey alongside Steven Fletcher up front on the second half but it didn't work and five minutes in a Steven Caldwell error gifted them a second with Kevin Doyle netting.

We should have had a penalty when Fletcher's shirt was all but ripped off his back but referee Martin Atkinson incredibly saw nothing but in the end there was to be no comeback in what had been the worst performance of the season to date.

The teams were;

Wolves: Marcus Hahnemann, Richard Stearman, Jody Craddock, Christophe Berra, Steven Ward, Kevin Foley, Kark Henry, Nenad Milijas (Michael Mancienne 68), Matt Jarvis (Chris Iwelumo 87), Kevin Doyle (George Elokobi), Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. Subs not used: Wayne Hennessey, Andrew Surman, Stefan Maierhofer, Segundo Castillo.

Burnley: Brian Jensen, Tyrone Mears, Clarke Carlisle (Michael Duff 34), Steven Caldwell (Joey Gudjonsson 68), Stephen Jordan, Graham Alexander, Wade Elliott, Kevin McDonald, Andre Bikey (David Nugent 53), Chris Eagles, Steven Fletcher. Subs not used: Diego Penny, Robbie Blake, Steven Thompson, Fernando Guerrero.
