No points at stake tonight

Jimmy Holland’s was the last against Oldham and the last player to have a testimonial match was Alan Stevenson and that was back in 1982 when John Bond brought his Manchester City.

Tonight it is Manchester United, the country’s most successful club in the last decade, and they are here to help Stan Ternent celebrate his testimonial. And it has all come about because of Stan’s friendship with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Because of international calls and injuries neither side will be at full strength but that’s not important tonight – although Ferguson has revealed that he will be bringing as strong a side as possible.

It’s Stan’s night and he will be able to watch some of the players he signed for the Clarets play against Manchester United alongside his family and friends.

And those friends will provide a who’s who of football style guest list with fellow managers, former Clarets and one or two others joining him. Many of those names have been mentioned but there could be a surprise or two for the crowd.

Far be it for me to give any names away but don’t be over surprised should a goal scoring loan player from a couple of years ago make an appearance.

As for the teams – there were fears that Manchester United might bring with them a scratch team but with some assistance from international suspensions and retirements Ferguson revealed yesterday that their line up would include Diego Forlan, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Ricardo, Paul Scholes and Mikael Silvestre. That is far from a scratch team.

For the Clarets it will be an opportunity for some of the younger players to get a run out. Four of the team that won at Watford will be unavailable because of international calls and injury these being Richard Chaplow, Danny Coyne, Michael Duff and Micah Hyde.

This will provide the likes of Matt O’Neill and Joel Pilkington with the opportunity to play against some top players, it will be a special night for them and will be a great boost for them.

The turnstiles open at 6 tonight and there will be entertainment from a Proclaimers tribute band to start off proceedings before all the special guests will be presented to the crowd in the 30 minutes leading up to kick off.

Jeff Brown, I say Jeff Brown, will as usual be down at pitchside but tonight he will be joined by former Claret Paul Fletcher who will introduce all those special guests. Stan will be back on the pitch just before kick off to meet the teams and then it is up to the players to provide the entertainment as the game kicks off at 7:30.

As always Clarets Mad will be at the Turf for the match to report on the events although we will be viewing this one from a somewhat different angle.
