Next Game – Sunderland (home)

Nothing ever lasts for ever. I’ve certainly realised that in my personal life in the past few days and it is also going to be the same for some Burnley FC personalities on Sunday.

Glen Little will be saying farewell as he plays his last game in Claret & Blue having decided to move on to Reading. That worst kept secret was finally confirmed on Monday of this week but it was soon yesterday's news as it was revealed on the following morning that Stan Ternent and Sam Ellis would be leaving the club after the last game of the season.

With the Clarets safe for another season and with the Mackems already booked for the play offs it turns and end of season game into an emotional afternoon for the three of them and for the fans who will be able to say goodbye.

Sunderland have given themselves a second chance of returning to the Premiership having ensured their play off place with a victory over Champions Norwich in midweek. It is all a far cry from the side that was relegated from the Premiership with a record low in points won and goals scored.

It is a much changed team after Mick McCarthy was forced into getting rid of the high earners and despite starting with a couple of defeats they were soon into the top positions but they had dropped back into mid table by December.

They hardly looked promotion candidates when we drew 1-1 at the Stadium of Light on the last Saturday in November and with any luck at all that day we would have come home with all three points.

A fantastic run from Christmas that run into April virtually confirmed a top six spot as well as taking them to the last four in the FA Cup but a sudden hiccup left them hanging on until last Tuesday before they could confirm a play off place.

There’s been little change to the personnel since we played there in November. The only permanent signing was a surprise when they took Darren Byfield from Rotherham with Michael Proctor going in the other direction.

They have had a couple of Coopers on loan – Kevin from Wolves and Colin from Middlesbrough – but both have now left and the only current loan player is Portsmouth’s Carl Robinson who scored the crucial goal in midweek.

Sunderland are a club heavily in debt and would hardly be able to go crazy with squad strengthening if they were to go up. There’s no doubt that the current squad can hardly compare to the side that last won promotion with players such as Thomas Sorensen, Andy Melville, Niall Quinn, Kevin Phillips and of course Bally.

The team that beat Norwich was: Mart Poom, George McCartney, Gary Breen, Phil Babb, Joachim Bjorkland, John Oster (Ben Clark 88), Jeff Whitley, Carl Robinson, Sean Thornton, Marcus Stewart (Tommy Smith 80), Kevin Kyle. Subs not used: Thomas Myhre, Simon Ramsden, Darren Byfield.

It is a long time since we beat Sunderland in a league game – 31 years to be exact – and what a wonderful day that was. Click HERE to read more about it.
