Next Game – Coventry City (away)

Coventry were somewhat surprise winners at the Turf in December with Eric Black in charge after Gary McAllister had stood down just days before due to personal reasons.

They were down in 17th place in the league at the time but brought to an end a run of eight league games without a win and leapfrogged the Clarets with a 2-1 win.

McAllister has ended his association on a permanent basis now and Black has taken on the job full time and although they have only climbed four places in the league their place in Division One is all but assured for next season as they sit just one point away from Stan’s safety target of 50.

He’s changed the team around a bit and been able to bring in five new players, one on a permanent basis and four on loan since that December win at Burnley.

The permanent signing is French defender Eric Deloumeaux who arrived from Aberdeen in mid-January.

Portsmouth’s Courtney Pitt was the first of the four loan signings and he has been followed by former Stoke midfielder Bjarni Gudjonsson from VfL Bochum and defenders Martin Grainger and Peter Clarke from Premiership clubs Birmingham and Everton respectively.

Not for the first time they suffered an inglorious exit from the FA Cup when they fell to 2nd Division Colchester in a Layer Road replay with Rowan Vine grabbing a hat trick.

But the league form has continued and in the last month they have won four and lost two with the two defeats coming against the top two clubs.

That last defeat was last Saturday at West Brom when they went down 3-0 to goals from Geoff Horsfield, Rob Hulse and Mark Kinsella.

Black accepted it was the correct result but claimed that West Brom out muscled his side rather than out playing them but did feel that his side only played well in patches. He thought his players were tired and said he would be giving them a few days rest before they took on the Clarets this weekend.

Coventry’s team was: Scott Shearer, Martin Grainger, Callum Davenport, Steve Staunton, Peter Clarke, Stephen Warnock (Craig Pead), Eric Deloumeaux, Michael Doyle, Bjarni Gudjonsson (Dele Adebola 76), Julian Joachim, Gary McSheffrey. Subs not used: Gavin Ward, Mo Konjic, Richard Shaw.

The Clarets will be hoping to continue a run that has seen us unbeaten in league action at Highfield Road since 1971.
