Ipswich again after just three weeks

There’s little to add from the preview for the away game, the Tractor Boys have played just four games since our meeting down in Suffolk. They’ve certainly been amongst the goals too and after two 2-2 draws on their travels they returned home to win 3-0 and 5-1 against Preston and Sheffield United respectively.

Both Shefki Kuqi and Ian Westlake have scored three goals in those games and it has seen Ipswich climb into 2nd place, two points clear of Reading.

Had we been able to hang on to our lead down there it would have seen us in 8th place just five points below them but there’s now a twelve point gap.

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock felt his side could have got something from the game on Tuesday despite the 5-1 scoreline, but admitted they had defended badly against a good team.

I bet Joe Royle was delighted that a team defended badly against his Ipswich side, he’s certainly been having another go at us in the build up to tomorrow’s game.

He must have also been delighted with what was apparently their best performance of the season.

Royle might well have to do without Jason De Vos tomorrow who is struggling with a thigh injury. Otherwise he has a full strength squad to choose from and that means a return for goalkeeper Kelvin Davis who has been out with a back injury.

Deputy keeper Lewis Price has been in excellent form but it would be no surprise to see Davis go straight back in. De Vos’ absence will mean a shuffle across the back four with former Claret Driss Diallo moving into the centre and Fabian Wilnis moving to right back.

That will see a return for Matt Richards on the left. He might well have scored that late, late equaliser against us but he hasn’t started since.

The Ipswich team is likely to be: Kelvin Davis, Fabian Wilnis, Driss Diallo, Richard Naylor, Matt Richards, Tommy Miller, Jim Magilton, Kevin Horlock, Ian Westlake, Darren Bent, Shefki Kuqi. Subs from: Lewis Price, Dean Bowditch, Aiden Collins, Pablo Counago, Scott Mitchell, Antonio Murray.

Steve Cotterill will be at least one more down tomorrow with Michael Duff out suspended. He and Frank Sinclair are collecting yellow cards too easily right now and it has now brought Duff his second suspension.

The bad news today is that Danny Coyne will be out for three months, a new goalkeeper will come in next week, whilst Richard Chaplow will be out for around a month. Graham Branch and Jean-Louis Valois are again ruled out whilst Ian Moore recovers from surgery.

The big hope is that John McGreal, who was battered by Leeds on Wednesday, will somehow pull through and be able to play. If that’s the case then Lee Roche will move to right back for Duff with Amadou Sanokho coming in for his first start on the right hand side of midfield.

We should line up: Brian Jensen, Lee Roche, Frank Sinclair, John McGreal, Mo Camara, Amadou Sanokho, Micah Hyde, Tony Grant, James O’Connor, Richard Duffy, Robbie Blake. Subs: Paul Scott, Mark Yates, Joel Pilkington, Matt O’Neill plus one other.

It was February this year when Ipswich were last at Burnley and it was a special day for two Burnley fans, Ben Golby and Paul Warburton who walked it to the game from Lancaster and in doing so raised over £1,700 for the Club’s 500 Mile fund.

They were rewarded with an excellent performance and a 4-2 victory with goals from Glen Little, David May, Richard Chaplow and Robbie Blake whilst Ipswich replied with goals form Ian Westlake and Martijn Reuser.

It looked all over at 3-0 but the Tractor Boys came back and hit the bar in stoppage time with the score 3-2 before we broke for Robbie to turn in Glen Little’s cross to confirm the points.

The teams were,

Burnley: Brian Jensen, Lee Roche, David May, Mark McGregor, Mo Camara, Glen Little, Richard Chaplow, Tony Grant, Paul Weller (Bradley Orr 75), Robbie Blake, Ian Moore. Subs not used: Paul Rachubka, Dean West, Alan Moore, Luke Chadwick.

Ipswich: Kelvin Davis, Fabian Wilnis (Matt Richards 31), John McGreal, Richard Naylor, Driss Diallo (Pablo Counago 45), Ian Westlake, Jim Magilton, Jermaine Wright, Tommy Miller, Shefki Kuqi (Martjn Reuser 63), Darren Bent. Subs not used: Lewis Price, Georges Santos.
