Hillsborough next for Clarets

Last season was something of a struggle and they spent some of the time at the bottom of the league, there were periods when they looked to be heading back down but a run of five wins and just one defeat from the last eight games pulled them clear of the bottom three and to safety.

It had been a tough season and manager Paul Sturrock set about improving his squad over the summer and made some early signings, bringing in three new players by the end of May. The first of them was Wade Small from Franchise and he's started the first two games on the bench.

He then, just as Steve Cotterill has done this summer, raided Crewe to bring in two further players. Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra has formally joined Wednesday from Gueugnon but he was with Dario G's boys at the end of last season on loan and was expected to make the move permanent during the summer.

He opted though for Hillsborough as did former Alex captain Kenny Lunt. A number of clubs had been interested in him and it looked as though he was on his way to Wolves but on the last day of May he completed his move to Wednesday.

There have been two more new players since. Southampton's Yoan Folly was with them on loan in the last three months of last season and Sturrock went back to his former club to complete a deal for him in the summer before adding Middlesbrough's Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones on loan.

So far they have one point from the two games, that coming in a goalless draw at Preston last Saturday. They followed that up with a 1-0 home defeat against Luton on Tuesday but were somewhat unfortunate not to get anything from the game.

Burnley will be looking to ensure that they don't get their first win of the season, and to continue our good start to the season.

Team News

Sturrock will not have a full squad to choose from, he was already without some players and has been dealt a further blow with the news that Folly will be out for some time after sustaining a knee injury on Tuesday in the defeat against Luton.

He has six other players already out with long term injuries which means we won't see any of Barry Corr (thigh), Deon Burton (hamstring), Richard Wood (groin), Drew Talbot (knee), Marcus Tudgay (toe) and Peter Gilbert (knee).

Steve Adams will also be out with a knee injury whilst Lee Bullen is ruled out with a suspension following his sending off at Preston. There is good news for the Wednesday boss with both Frank Simek (conjunctivitis) and Tommy Spurr (virus) expected to be available.

Wednesday are expected to line up: Brad Jones, Frank Simek, Graham Coughlan, Madjid Bougherra, John Hills, Chris Brunt, Sean McAllister, Glenn Whelan, Burton O'Brien, Kenny Lunt, Steven MacLean. Subs from: Chris Adamson, Dave McClements, Wade Small, Tommy Spurr, Simon Hodgkinson, Liam Moorhouse.

There are no new injury worries for the Clarets. Danny Coyne is still unavailable whilst Danny Karbassiyoon is still ruled out with the knee injury he picked up in pre-season.

It is unlikely that Steve Cotterill will make many, if any changes, and I expect it to be the same sixteen who have been on duty in both games so far. If he opts for the same starting line up as he did at Leicester then the Burnley team will be:

Brian Jensen, Frank Sinclair, Wayne Thomas, Michael Duff, Jon Harley, Wade Elliott, Micah Hyde, Chris McCann, Alan Mahon, Andy Gray, Steve Jones. Subs: Stephen Foster, John McGreal, Garreth O'Connor, James O'Connor, Kyle Lafferty.

Last Meeting

It was hardly a classic but earned Burnley a first away point in weeks from a 0-0 draw. It was a game we should have won, we created the better chances with the best of all falling to Chris McCann who headed wide right in front of the Burnley fans at the Leppins Lane End.

For Burnley, Andy Gray had a good game whilst the two central defenders Michael Duff and Frank Sinclair were outstanding but there were some disappointing performances elsewhere on the pitch. The teams were;

Sheffield Wednesday: Scott Carson, Frankie Simek, Mikkel Bischoff (Lee Bullen 45), Graham Coughlan, John Hills, Chris Brunt (Leon Best 66), Yoann Folly, Glenn Whelan, Burton O'Brien, Deon Burton (Jon-Paul McGovern 83), Marcus Tudgay. Subs not used: Chris Adamson, Steven MacLean.

Burnley: Brian Jensen, Phil Bardsley, Michael Duff, Frank Sinclair, Jon Harley, Graham Branch, James O'Connor, Chris McCann, Alan Mahon, Michael Ricketts (John Spicer 82), Andy Gray. Subs not used: John McGreal, Micah Hyde, Wade Elliott, Kyle Lafferty.
