Clarets to go Cherry picking

Our visitors are not happy, in particular their Chairman has behaved like some spoiled child after we beat Liverpool and robbed his club of what they expected to be a big pay day at Anfield.

That’s how it is in cup football, it has happened to us before and it will happen again, and no matter what team Liverpool put out is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is we beat them and Bournemouth are at the Turf instead.

Our last league meetings were in the Second Division some six seasons ago when we took all six points from them with a 2-1 win on the Turf early in the season and then recorded a 1-0 success at Dean Court in February 2000 with Andy Payton getting the winner.

The things I remember about that day were defending for so long to keep the lead intact, Ian Cox getting a warm reception from his former fans and dismissing some ‘idiot’ in the pub beforehand who was incredibly suggesting that we would sign Ian Wright in the following week.

Bournemouth were relegated two years later but were in the basement division for only a year and have done well since they came back with a ninth place finish last season and currently in eighth place.

Their current manager Sean O’Driscoll took over just after the start of the 2000/01 season from Mel Machin and is now in the top ten longest serving managers in the league. He was allowed to carry on after the relegation and has had to cope with financial problems and even moving out for a while until their new ground was built on the same site but at 90 degrees to the original.

Their FA Cup exploits so far this season have seen them beat Forest Green Rovers 3-1 in a home replay after a 1-1 draw followed by 2-1 wins against Carlisle and Chester.

The man to watch in terms of goals is James Hayter, although he is still to find the net in the FA Cup whilst they also include Steve Fletcher who back in the nineties partnered Steve Cotterill in the Bournemouth attack before the Clarets’ boss suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

Dani Rodrigues is a major doubt whilst former Burnley target Eddie Howe is expected to be passed fit and take a place on the bench whilst Neil Young is ruled out after having surgery this week for a hernia.

Bournemouth are expected to line up:

Neil Moss, Stephen Purches, Karl Broadhurst, Shaun Maher, Warren Cummings, Wade Elliott, Marcus Browning, John Spicer, Garreth O’Connor, Steve Fletcher, James Hayter. Subs: Gareth Stewart, James Coutts, Eddie Howe, Derek Holmes, Alan Connell.

Steve Cotterill will be without Michael Duff but just about everyone else is raring to go and that should include Richard Chaplow who as far as we know is still a Claret.

Chappy will come back in for James O’Connor but Graham Branch might just have to settle for a place on the bench if Frank Sinclair is fit and able to take his place at right back.

There’s been some speculation this week that there could be a new signing in the Burnley squad, there’s no confirmation of this but obviously if anyone has been signed they could come straight into the squad.

Otherwise the Burnley team will be:

Brian Jensen, Frank Sinclair, Gary Cahill, John McGreal, Mo Camara, Lee Roche, Richard Chaplow, Tony Grant, Micah Hyde, Jean-Louis Valois, Ian Moore. Subs: Danny Coyne, Paul Scott, Joel Pilkington, Graham Branch, Matt O’Neill.

The last time the two sides met in the FA Cup was in the 3rd round 39 years ago. A 1-1 draw at Dean Court, Willie Irvine got our goal, meant a replay on the Turf.

The BBC revealed they would be covering it, Bob Lord said they wouldn’t and told them if they did not remove their cameras he would burn them, the BBC were forced to announced technical difficulties and again Lord had ensured that fans unable to get to the ground had missed out.

Many did though, on a night when the rain poured, and almost 22,000 were there to see the Clarets see off the team then called Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic with a 7-0 win.

Irvine was again on the scoresheet, as was Gordon Harris, but the night belonged to Andy Lochhead who hit five to see the Clarets through to a tie against Spurs at White Hart Lane.

The teams were,

Burnley: Adam Blacklaw, John Angus, Alex Elder, John Talbut, Dave Merrington, Brian Miller, Willie Morgan, Andy Lochhead, Willie Irvine, Gordon Harris, Ralph Coates.

Bournemouth: David Best, Phil Ferns, Bill Coxon, Graham Newton, Roy Gater, Joe Ashworth, Ray Bumstead, Ken Hodgson, Dennis Coughlin, John Archer, Charlie Crickmore.
