Clarets to celebrate the New Year in Newcastle

Last updated : 31 December 2014 By Tony Scholes

This is very much the one for the ground tickers. It's incredible to think that it is now over 32 years since we last played a game at St. James' Park but that is very much the case and, other than those grounds we've never played at, we have visited every Premier and Football League club since.

Ready to kick on for Newcastle says Kieran Trippier

The 1-1 draw against them just over four weeks ago was our first meeting competitively since a Terry Donovan goal gave us a 1-0 home win against them in March 2003. Since then we've been in different divisions each season and neither have we been paired in either cup competition.

My first visit was in 1969 when a Bobby Moncur own goal gave us a 1-0 win but for many of the Burnley fans up in the gods tomorrow it will be a first visit to a ground that looks considerably different to the one I last saw.

On Sunday Kieran Trippier played against his former club Manchester City. Of that, he said: "It was good to go back and obviously as a Burnley player it was a great result in the end."

Now looking forward, he added: "With the belief in the team we just can't wait to kick on now for Newcastle."

He did confirm that he won't be joining the many Burnley fans already in the city for New Year and that he'd be in bed for ten with the only concentration being the game. He did joke though: "I've set my alarm for one minute past twelve to wake Vokesy up, my roommate, just to say Happy New Year to him."

Vokes was left out of the squad for Sunday's game at the Etihad but returns for tomorrow's game when Sean Dyche is expected to again rotate his squad to a similar extent as Sunday.

That should, injuries apart, mean an unchanged team. We should line up: Tom Heaton, Kieran Trippier, Michael Keane, Jason Shackell, Ben Mee, George Boyd, Dean Marney, David Jones, Scott Arfield, Danny Ings, Ashley Barnes. Subs from: Matt Gilks, Steven Reid, Kevin Long, Danny Lafferty, Nathaniel Chalobah, Ross Wallace, Michael Kightly, Lukas Jutkiewicz, Marvin Sordell, Sam Vokes.

It's been all change at Newcastle in the last few days. I don't think many would have considered Alan Pardew would be targeted by Crystal Palace after the sacking of Neil Warnock, nor that Pardew would be interested in returning to Selhurst Park where he enjoyed part of his playing career.

He's still officially the Newcastle manager but he's in talks at Palace which means John Carver and Steve Stone will be in charge for tomorrow's game.

We face a team that ended a run of three defeats on Sunday with a 3-2 win against Everton. They went from a goal down to 3-1 up before winning 3-2 with leading goalscorer Papiss Cisse scoring the first goal.

Cisse, who scored their goal at Burnley, won't play tomorrow. He was picked up elbowing Everton's Seamus Coleman and was charged by the FA. He accepted the charge and apologised for his actions and will now serve a three match ban.

It's difficult, given Pardew's absence, just how they will line up. The team that beat Everton on Sunday was: Jak Alnwick, Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Paul Dummett, Moussa Sissoko, Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback, Yoan Gouffran, Ayoze Perez, Papiss Cisse. Subs: Freddie Woodman, Davide Santon, Steven Taylor, Vurnon Anita, Adam Armstrong, Remy Cambella, Emmanuel Riviere.

Last Time We Were There

It was as far back as 6th November 1982 when we last played at Newcastle. At the time, Newcastle were in 13th place in the second division but Burnley, having won promotion in the previous season had seen a good start evaporate. We were now fourth from bottom with just 10 points from 12 games. We lost 3-0 and that saw us drop into the bottom three.

The teams were;

Newcastle: Kevin Carr, Kenny Wharton, John Anderson, Mick Martin, Jeff Clarke, Peter Haddock, Kevin Keegan, David McCreary, Imre Varadi, Terry McDermott, Chris Waddle.

Burnley: Alan Stevenson, Brian Laws, Andy Wharton, Micky Phelan, David Holt, Derek Scott, Martin Dobson, Trevor Steven, Billy Hamilton, Paul McGee, Kevin Young.
