Clarets stretched as Carling Cup gets underway

Frank Sinclair, Brian Jensen and Karl Bermingham will all be missing as the Clarets take on Carlisle in the first round of the Carling Cup tonight, a tie that initially on paper looked a good bet for a home banker.

It is fair to say that the Cumbrians have had a few turbulent years, they were lumbered with ball juggling Michael Knighton, were apparently rescued by John Courtenay who then brought in his mate Roddy Collins to manage the side, and now they are under the stewardship of a new chairman and owner in Fred Storey who has fallen out with the Supporters’ Trust. Other than that everything is going well at Brunton Park, now the flood damage has been repaired.

After hanging on to their League status by the narrowest of margins more than once, and who can forget the antics of former Burnley loan keeper Jimmy Glass, they finally dropped into the Conference in 2004. A year later though, under the management of Paul Simpson they returned after beating Aldershot and Stevenage in the end of season play offs.

Simpson has certainly not made massive changes to his squad over the summer and has brought in just four players. Tony Williams was first, the goalkeeper who started his career with Blackburn signed from Grimsby. He had been an ever present in the Grimsby side last season.

Former Walsall defender Zigor Aranalde was next, the Spaniard ended last season with Sheffield Wednesday before signing for Carlisle. Woking forward Raphael Nade and Newcastle midfielder Jamie McLen are the others who make up the four.

Williams and Aranalde have played in all four games so far whilst Nade has been on the bench. McLen, who was in the Carlisle side beaten 4-1 by the Clarets last Wednesday at Accrington, is returning from injury and could be on the bench.

They have made a good start to the new season and have lost just once, at home to Barnet who came up with them from the Conference. They are currently in eighth place with seven points from their four games.

Team News

Whilst Steve Cotterill will be looking round today to see who can play there are no such problems for Simpson who is set to announce the same team after Saturday’s 1-0 win at Wrexham. The only change could see the return of McLen via the bench.

If that’s the case Carlisle will line up: Tony Williams, Paul Arnison, Danny Livesey, Kevin Gray, Zigor Aranalde, Brendan McGill, Adam Murray, Chris Billy, Paul Simpson, Karl Hawley, Derek Holmes. Subs from: Glenn Murray, Simon Hackney, Kieran Westwood, Peter Murphy, Raphael Nade.

If it is same again for Simpson, it certainly isn’t for Steve Cotterill who must be wondering just how on earth he is going to get a team out on the pitch tonight. We were without Danny Karbassiyoon, Wade Elliott, John McGreal and Wayne Thomas on Saturday and there is no news as to whether any of them will be able to return.

Certainly Danny K won’t and Elliott is very unlikely, there have been suggestions though that one of the two central defenders could make it. If that is the case he will replace Frank Sinclair who is definitely out after aggravating a hamstring injury, it forced him off after 25 minutes on Saturday.

Brian Jensen is also out, Danny Coyne will replace him and Stuart Pearce has not given us permission to play Karl Bermingham so expect Kyle Lafferty to take his place.

We should line up: Danny Coyne, Micah Hyde, Michael Duff, John McGreal (or Wayne Thomas), Graham Branch, Kyle Lafferty, James O’Connor, Garreth O’Connor, Chris McCann, Gifton Noel-Williams, Ade Akinbiyi. Subs: Mark Yates plus youth team players Mark Crossley, Marc Pugh and Martin Reilly.

Last Time

We’ve played Carlisle just once previously in the League Cup (then the Coca Cola Cup) and that was thirteen years ago following our Division Four Championship season. Despite the fact that Carlisle were a division below us at the time, things hardly went to plan and we went out at the first hurdle.

The damage was done in the first leg at Brunton Park, as we lost 4-1 with Danny Sonner getting our goal. Things weren’t much better in the second leg as the Carlisle forwards Andy Watson and George Oghani run us ragged, we did at least earn ourselves a 1-1 draw in that second leg with John Pender getting our goal.

The teams for the games were as follows,

First leg at Brunton Park:

Carlisle: Kelham O’Hanlon, Neil Williams, Jeff Thorpe, Micky Holmes (Derek Walsh), Dean Walling (Ian Arnold), Andy Barnsley, Ricardo Gabbiadini, Simon Davey, George Oghani, Andy Watson, Darren Edmondson.

Burnley: David Williams, Ian Measham, Joe Jakub, Adrian Randall, John Pender, Andy Farrell, Steve Penney, Mark Yates, Robbie Painter (Danny Sonner), Mike Conroy, Steve Harper.

Second leg at Turf Moor:

Burnley: David Williams, Ian Measham, Joe Jakub, Adrian Randall, John Pender, Andy Farrell, Steve Penney (Les Thompson), John Deary, John Clayton (Adrian Heath), Mike Conroy, Robbie Painter.

Carlisle: Kelham O’Hanlon, Neil Williams, Jeff Thorpe, Micky Holmes, Dean Walling, Andy Barnsley, Ricardo Gabbiadini, Simon Davey, George Oghani, Andy Watson, Darren Edmondson.Townsend.
