Clarets looking for cup progress

Last updated : 12 August 2008 By Tony Scholes

Just three days into Ternent's first season in charge he took his Burnley side back to old club Bury for a first round tie and came back with a 1-1 draw courtesy of an Andy Cooke goal. There was to be no good news the week after for Stan as Bury came to the Turf and recorded a 4-1 win to go through.

Six years later Steve Cotterill had better luck when his Burnley side made the same journey. Two Robbie Blake goals, one a penalty, followed a Dwayne Mattis own goal to give us a 3-2 win that led to home games against Wolves, Aston Villa and Spurs before we went out.

Tonight Owen Coyle follows the same route as he looks to get his Burnley side back on track after that awful display on the opening day of the season at Hillsborough.

Our Opponents

Bury ended last season in thirteenth place in League Two and it was a season that saw both manager Chris Casper and director of football Keith Alexander lose their jobs.

The job was handed to former player Alan Knill, who had previously managed Rotherham, in February and a remarkable change in fortune lifted them clear of a relegation battle. It looked as though Wrexham and Mansfield had been drifting away all season but on the day Knill was appointed they sat just two and three points respectively above the two sides that suffered the drop.

Knill has made a few changes to the squad over the summer whilst releasing a good number of players including former Burnley trainee Ashley Young. The best known of the signings, as far as Burnley are concerned, are probably forward Andy Morrell and defender Efe Sodje who is still best remembered for his antics at Macclesfield almost a decade ago.

Sodje ended last season on loan at Gigg Lane and the 35-year-old has now played in excess of 350 league games in his career for nine different clubs.

Bury have got the season off to a good start and it was no surprise to see that it was Andy Bishop who scored their goal in a 1-0 home win over Brentford on Saturday.

They are not expected to struggle this season and will prove an obstacle for the Clarets tonight as we search for the sort of form we need to get results in the Championship. And I'm sure we'd all love to enjoy a cup run.

Team News

Andy Morrell comes into the Bury squad for tonight's game after signing from Blackpool. But he's not featured in any of Blackpool's pre-season games so is expected to start from the bench, a bench that will be a bit bigger for both sides tonight with seven substitutes to be named.

Sodje (broken fingers) and Paul Scott (stitches in the head) are both expected to be passed fit as will Brian Barry-Murphy who took a knock on his knee, and that means Knill will almost certainly select the side that won on Saturday.

If so they will line up: Wayne Brown, Paul Scott, David Buchanan, Ben Futcher, Stephen Dawson, Glynn Hurst, Andy Bishop, Brian Barry-Murphy, Michael Jones, Efe Sodge, Elliott Bennet. Subs: Ryan Cresswell, Richie Baker, Danny Racchi, Cameron Belford, Domaine Rouse, Andy Morrell plus one more.

Owen Coyle has promised changes but it is not certain where those changes will come. The three players he awarded pass marks to were Stephen Jordan, Wade Elliott and Martin Paterson so it can be safely assumed that these three will play although beyond that it is anyone's guess.

He'll select from: Diego Penny, Graham Alexander, Christian Kalvenes, Michael Duff, Steven Caldwell, Kevin McDonald, Joey Gudjonsson, Ade Akinbiyi, Martin Paterson, Wade Elliott, Brian Jensen, Steve Jones, Chris McCann, Alan Mahon, Jay Rodriguez, Robbie Blake, Stephen Jordan, Adam Kay, Remco van der Schaaf, Alex MacDonald and Chris Eagles.

Last Time

Robbie Blake
Robbie Blake - scored two goals in the 3-2 win
It was an unexpected result last time we played Bury in this competition. We'd played four league games and conceded just two goals in total with our new look back four including new signings Michael Duff, Frank Sinclair and John McGreal in front of new keeper Danny Coyne.

Yet Bury scored twice against us, playing a direct style of getting high balls into our box. Dwayne Mattis was credited with the goal that gave them the lead but it was clearly scored by the youngster making a name for himself David Nugent, and this was before he started using his mobile phone for photographs.

Mattis might not have got that one, but he did score five minutes later when he put through his own goal to equalise for the Clarets, but Bury came back to take the lead again within a minute as Brian Barry-Murphy found Dave Challinor who all too easily got above Duff to head home.

But Robbie Blake was our inspiration. He played the perfect ball for Mo Camara rampaging down the left wing. Mo was brought down for the most blatant of penalties and Robbie scored from the spot.

It was 2-2 at half time and we won it with a second Blake goal, this time turning in a cross from Camara from down the left. Almost immediately it was almost four as Richard Chaplow and Duff combined to set up Ian Moore who saw his effort go inches wide. A 3-2 win in the end and a home game against Wolves to follow.

The teams were;

Bury: Glyn Garner, Simon Whaley (Jon Newby 75), Tom Kennedy, Paul Scott, Dave Challinor, Lee Unsworth, Dwayne Mattis, Dave Flitcroft, Brian Barry-Murphy (Terry Dunfield 45), Dave Nugent, Chris Porter. Subs not used: Lee Duxbury, John Cartledge, Greg Smith.

Burnley: Danny Coyne, Michael Duff, Frank Sinclair, John McGreal, Mo Camara, Ian Moore, Richard Chaplow, Tony Grant, Micah Hyde (Lee Roche 65), Graham Branch, Robbie Blake. Subs not used: Brian Jensen, Matt O'Neill, Joel Pilkington, Ryan Townsend.
