Clarets head for Gigg Lane

Graham Branch - the remaining survivor from our last friendly at Bury
Unlike the Accrington game, this is not a regular pre-season fixture, although we played them four years ago prior to the 2002/03 season. That was during the time when Bury were in a major financial mess and we were doing our bit to help them out.

As it happened, only 1,852 turned up for a game and it was hardly a classic. In fact it was a poor game all round that ended in a 1-1 draw. We led at half time through one of those rare Tony Grant goals, as he latched on to a through ball from the impressive Alan Moore to slide the ball home for his first goal in Burnley colours.

There were too many substitutions during the second half that spoiled it but the highlight of that half was the appearance of Dimitri Papadopoulos. Four minutes after coming on as a substitute the referee asked the Burnley bench to substitute him after he was pulled up for diving. He was allowed to return later but received a hostile reception from the odd Bury fan in the ground.

The teams that day were:

Bury: Glynn Garner, Matty Barrass, Jamie Stewart, Danny Swailes (Michael Nelson 74), Steve Redmond (Nicky Hill 74), Lee Unsworth, Lee Connell (Seb Rowe 83), Martyn Forrest (Paul O'Shaugnessy 72), Jon Newby (Steve Gunby 77), Pawell Abbott (David Nugent 72), George Clegg (Liam George 72).

Burnley: Nik Michopoulos, Dean West (Andrew Leeson 72), Steve Davis (Ian Cox 66), Marlon Broomes (Earl Davis 69), Graham Branch (Mark McGregor 64), Glen Little (Ian Moore 78), Tony Grant (Alan Moore 65), Lee Briscoe (Andrew Waine 72), Alan Moore (Robbie Blake 29, Dimitri Papadopoulos 74), Ian Moore (Dimitri Papadopoulos 56, Andy Payton 63), Gareth Taylor (Matt O'Neill 69).

There won't be many of those players taking part tonight, a quick look at the squads will point to Graham Branch as the only survivor from that game four years ago.

Although he never played for Burnley, the Bury manager Chris Casper has more than a passing interest in the Clarets. His dad both played for and managed us having joined the club from Rotherham in 1967. It is a fair assumption that Chris has probably watched more football at Turf Moor than anywhere else.

He also has two former Burnley players in his squad, both signed towards the end of last season and now both having extended their stays by signing new contracts. One of them is defender Chris Brass who is back in league football after enduring a difficult time at York City after ending his time as manager there, the other is 19 year old Marc Pugh, a prolific scorer in our youth team last season but not offered a deal at the end of his three year scholarship.

Casper has strengthened his squad with some summer signings. York forward Andy Bishop, youngster Richie Baker from Preston, experienced goalkeeper Alan Fettis and Grimsby's Marc Goodfellow have all been added to the squad.

Bury are expected to be without two players tonight – Andy Parrish has a head injury after colliding with a concrete wall and Jake Speight is suffering from tonsillitis. Other than that Casper has a full squad to select from and will choose from the following:

Alan Fettis, Paul Scott, Tom Kennedy, John Fitzgerald, Dave Challinor, Dwayne Mattis, Matthew Tipton, Brian Barry-Murphy, Andy Bishop, Marc Pugh, Marc Goodfellow, Colin Woodthorpe, Dave Flitcroft, Tom Youngs, Richie Baker, Chris Brass, Nicky Adams, David Buchanan, Mark Smythe, Damian Quigley, Aaron Grundy.

As we know, Burnley will be without goalkeeper Danny Coyne and news today has revealed that defender Michael Duff is also ruled out after tweaking a thigh in training yesterday. The club have also said that Danny Karbassiyoon, who has recently been on trial with AZ Alkmaar in Holland, is also unlikely to play.

Other than that we can expect Steve Cotterill to use the rest of his first team squad which is: Brian Jensen, Wayne Thomas, Jon Harley, John McGreal, Frank Sinclair, James O'Connor, Alan Mahon, Steve Jones, Andy Gray, Wade Elliott, Garreth O'Connor, Graham Branch, Chris McCann, Kyle Lafferty, Micah Hyde, John Spicer, Gifton Noel-Williams, Stephen Foster.
