When we are on top we need to be scoring goals

Pearson arrived at St. Mary's not too long ago as permanent replacement for George Burley and the former assistant boss of West Brom and Newcastle walked straight into a relegation fight where each game is of the utmost importance.

"It is a big game but all the games we've been playing recently have been massive," he said. "The Bristol City game was crucial, last Saturday was a very big game for us and this one again has a major importance for us.

"Throughout it all, what we have to do is perform to a high standard. When you play a big game, keeping your nerve is very important and the message for this game is the same as of late. We have to go out there and give a fully committed performance and play with no fear and enjoy the challenge.

"It is difficult because these games have a huge bearing on the club, but if we play how we can we have a good chance of getting the result we're all looking for. But, make no mistake, it will be tough. They're one of the few sides that in many ways have less pressure and that in itself can allow them to play with freedom."

Owen Coyle has seen our play off hopes disappear in the last few weeks with four defeats in our last five games. "I think supporters will be disappointed because we have been in amongst the top clubs since we came in, but ultimately in the last two weeks we've lost both games and that has curtailed our chances of being in those top six positions," he said looking forward to the game at Southampton.

"It is a fantastic stadium at Southampton and they are a good footballing side. We will give everything we can to come back with a win. We have to be more clinical and when we are on top we need to be scoring goals to be putting games to bed. We need that level of consistency though and that's what we are looking to develop to make sure we are a force to be reckoned with next season.

"We are working at a very high level in the Championship and we have to make sure mistakes are minimal. If someone is going to score a goal against you, you want it to be because they have earned it and we haven't gifted it. Far too often we have gifted goals through individual mistakes.

"I want to win the last three games and to finish as high up the league as possible because that gives us a platform to build on. There is everything to play for in the Championship, both at the top and the bottom. We are no different and we want to go and accumulate as many points as we can. That's the way we'll be treating these last three games."
