We're still only two wins away from the top half

It took a stoppage time goal from Chris Burke to win it for the home side and Hughton said after the game: "It was a big win and one that we deserved, even though we made hard work of it and left it late.

"I thought we tried to follow on from Saturday's game, certainly with the energy and level of performance, and we did that for large parts of the game. We just need to start making life a little bit easier for ourselves. We got into a lot of good areas and we just need to be more clinical.

"I was very happy with some of our offensive play but we need to make sure that we're working the opposition goalkeeper more than we are doing."

He added: "It was a big boost to get the goal so early on and that allowed us to go on and create other chances in that first-half period. At that stage you are desperate to get the second goal because you know, particularly after Saturday, that at 1-0 they (Burnley) are always in with a chance and that was the case.

"You know once they get their goal that they're going to get bodies behind the ball and make things difficult, but we were able to gather up a momentum after they scored and we had one very good chance through Ziggy, similar to David Murphy's on Saturday.

"Of course, as you get towards the end you think it's not going to be your day again but we've got a really spirited group of players here and the win was nothing less than they deserved."

He concluded: "I am happy with where we are. We just try and go about our business in the best way that we can. We've had a lot of games with the European campaign as well and we just want to be in there fighting and in a position to push on and stay in contention. We know it'll be more difficult for us but this win certainly takes us into a nice position."

With the Clarets set to get a point before that late goal, How admitted: "This one was a heartbreaker. It feels worse than Saturday and I thought we had done enough to get a great point.

"We defended for long spells very, very well and crosses were coming into our box and the two centre halves, especially second half, we excellent, but we conceded right at the end and it's really tough to take.

"When you lose four games in a row confidence is going to take a little knock and when you concede so early that rocks you. We struggled to impose ourselves on the game, but we started the second half brightly and for long spells I felt comfortable.

"We showed tremendous spirit to come back and I thought the lads gave everything. I think you can tell by their reaction at the end how frustrated they are and how it's hurting everyone. With that attitude I know we will come good.

"We are conceding late goals and that is something we have to eradicate, but I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with us. There are no massive areas that need fixing and we are always looking in the loan market to see who we can bring in to improve us.

"But that's the key word. They have to be able to improve us within the budgets we've got and that has proved difficult.

"The easy thing is to panic and make wholesale changes when I don't necessarily think that's the right thing to do. We have to use this as a motivation now to start again and have a springboard to go forward.

"We're still only two wins away from the top half, but I believe in the players and the team we have. At this time we have just got to be strong together. I have to show faith I my players and I do believe we are good enough; I really do. With more confidence and a couple more results you will see this team flourish.

"This could make us a lot stronger, streetwise and determined and we have to use this as a foundation to come back as stronger because I know this team can come good. Yes, I would like to add a couple of players in key areas, but we are going to wait for the right ones.

"We are not far away from being a very good side and I wouldn't be saying that if I felt we were getting outplayed every week. I don't believe that to be the case but we need to find our feet again and once we do we will be a better team for the experience."
