We're in the hat and that's the main thing

Although not sure about the three goal advantage Blackpool boss Steve McMahon accepted that Burnley deserved to go through, and so he should having been targeted for special praise this week by Stan.

It has to be said thought that McMahon was not too impressed with some of the defending from his players last night.

"For 20 minutes in the second half we certainly took the game to them. We had a glorious opportunity to make it 1-1 through big Murph and goals change games. I would have loved to see what would have happened if we could have scored. They might have wobbled.

"But with the injury problems we have in defence we were putting square pegs in round holes. In the first 15 minutes Burnley started very well, they looked sharp and lively and maybe a few of our players were feeling sorry for themselves.

"But we got to grips with that, got to grips with the tempo and it was never a 3-0 scoreline. They probably deserved to win but we put in a good performance.

"I was disappointed with the goals. I was bitterly disappointed with our wall at the free kick, the players have got be prepared to get hurt. They said they jumped but I think they jumped out of the way. You have got to stop the free kick. If the ball goes into the top corner there is nothing you can do about it but if it goes low into the middle of the net it is a problem. You have got to be brave but that killed us. I thought it was the wall’s problem not Barnesy.

"As for the penalty Simon Grayson is an inexperienced pro and he should know you just can't raise your hands in the 18 yard box. It was a definite penalty."

Stan was happy to see the Claret record back to back wins and a first home win of the season.

"I am very pleased that we have won for the first time at Turf Moor this season. Two wins in a row is a shot in the arm in terms of confidence, the players worked hard and it was a very good result.

"It was not a hard decision to keep the same side as they did particularly well in the second half at Derby.

"Blackpool weren't without chances in the second half after Macca changed to 4-4-2. You don't expect to go through games very often without the other team having chances but we had other good chances too.

"Blackpool played quite well and they passed the ball well but we worked hard and we now hope for a good draw in the next round. Every team would like a big club in the next round and we are no different.

"It thought it was convincing in the end but we’re in the hat and that’s the main thing."

Stan then explained his reasons for the three quick substitutions early in the second half.

"Robbie Blake is still recovering from a double hernia, Glen Little has had a virus in his chest and Ian Moore ran his socks off again so we needed to change it. But Dimitri is a good player and he is very sharp and has a good future ahead of him if he keeps his feet on the ground.

And finally on the injury to Paul Weller he told the club’s web site,

"Paul Weller has picked up a groin strain and we don’t know just how bad it is yet but it’s a chance you take when you are trying to give everyone a game. Sometimes using three substitutes works for you and sometimes it doesn’t but I felt it was the right thing to do at the time."
