We were down to the squad at its minimum tonight

Watford boss Gianfranco Zola, under pressure from some Watford fans, was delighted with his teams application tonight. He said: "We played with a lot of passion, a lot of desire and a lot of heart, some things that some people have criticised and doubted about this team in the last few days.

"Everything was in place today and the rest will come. We have the quality that will come out but without hard work you can have as much quality as you want, you won't succeed and that is a good lesson for us to learn."

He added: "I said it in the last few days the team has grown up a lot in developing this kind of bond between each other which is essential to play any type of football.

"I am delighted with the result, I really am. It was tough today and we knew it was going to be tough. We had to earn the right to play football today and we worked very hard in the first half and in the second half we played a little bit better and created some chances, but I am delighted we kept a clean sheet which was important today.

"In the first half Burnley had a great chance when Jonathan Bond made a great save from Scott Arfield but in the second half we had two chances, big chances. I thought we were going to win the game because the players were getting better as the game went on."

Burnley boss Dyche, who received a warm reception from the small number of Watford fans, remains positive despite this current run of five league games without a win, but he expressed some concerns over the Turf Moor atmosphere.

"I work in a positive manner," he said after the game. "I don't see the point in doing anything else and there were lots of positives. We have dominated a very good side, so there are really good signs of what we are about again and there's no bad news for me."

But then came the words on the crowd. He said: "There's plenty of bad in here when people start getting on people for no reason. I don't understand that, but I have got to get used to it, I've been here a year and it's part of the make-up."

Regarding the fact that he was without Michael Duff and Danny Ings tonight as well as Dean Marney, he added: "It's interesting. We knew these challenges might come our way and we were down to the squad at its minimum tonight, but the good side of that is Stevie Hewitt gets on and it's fantastic for him to get on the pitch tonight.

"Cameron Dummigan has got a feel of it along with Cammy Howieson, so there are some really good things about our squad and one is young players getting a feel for what it's all about."

Asked if we'd missed Ings, he replied: "Why wouldn't you miss Danny? The lad is on fire and scoring goals and he and Sam have proven to be a real handful together. He is getting better and we are hopeful the ankle will settle down and he's got a chance for Saturday.

"We'll see how that settles down but let's be fair, just because Watford are not going as strong as they were last year doesn't mean they are not a good side. They have got some really, really good players there.

"We dominated large parts of that game and just didn't quite find the cutting edge, but let's face it we have found that a lot this season.

"It was a dominant first half and we created a number of chances. Their keeper made a great save from Scott Arfield. In the second half the first 20 minutes levelled and then I thought we finished really strong, as we have a tendency to do.

"We've had to make a lot of changes tonight and I thought the lads applied themselves very well and tonight we moved a point closer to the top, which is nice for us."
