We were biting our nails

Walsall boss Colin Lee, not popular with the home fans, had said that this was a vital game and a win could well secure their first division future but he got neither the win nor a good performance from his team.

"I’m disappointed because of the importance of the game," said Lee having seen his side go down to their seventh home defeat of the season. "Particularly in the first half we just didn’t perform and it was an overall poor display.

"We didn’t deserve to get anything out of the game, but we have an immediate chance to get back on track at Gillingham on Monday.

"There is still a lot of football to be played and anyone who thinks we are home and dry is wrong. We won last week’s game with a penalty and lost this one in the same fashion, but I have no complaints with today’s penalty decision.

"Monday’s game is now a real six pointer and as I have said it will be a massive achievement if we can remain at this level for another year. It is much tougher keeping a club like Walsall in Division One than actually getting promotion from the second division."

Stan, who had to watch from a distance in the stand, was happy enough. "I thought we played well," he said. "We created a lot of chances and a lot of clear cut chances. It took a penalty to win it in the end and we were biting our nails when it really should have been more comfortable.

"I was pleased with the midfield runners, we need to get them into the box more and we did that today. Neil Wood did that really well and he missed a good opportunity. We don’t mind that if he keeps going because he will get one soon.

"We deserved the points but that hasn’t always been the case this season with teams scoring goals late on against us."

He admitted the downside was more injuries made worse by the fact that there is another game, against Watford, on Monday.

"We do have a few bumps and bruises. Chappy has a dead leg and that has swollen up rapidly. Paul Weller has a bit of a hamstring and Mark McGregor took a whack on his foot.

"We’ll get home and have a good rest now and see where we are at 3 o’clock on Monday."
