We were a bit too back-to-front

Dario G tried to come with his accusations of bullying, one he’s used a number of times before and an amazing deflection from the Crewe boss who must not have seen any of the antics of Luke Varney.

“It was hard work and they are a hard side to play against,” he said after the final whistle. “They lob the ball forward and Gifton Noel-Williams heads a few on for Akinbiyi to get on the end of. But they didn’t muscle us out.

“They scored from a free kick [it was a corner] but I thought we stood up quite well to the battering and we didn’t allow ourselves to get bullied. We didn’t play as much football as we would have liked, although we should flashes of what we can do, and we created quite a few chances as well, certainly more than they did.

“Luke Varney got in there in the first half and Steve Jones had two or three chances as well although wasn’t quite there today. But the pace of the two boys always gives us a chance. The two boys at the back handled their front two very well also.”

Dario G then went into his, we’ve been hard done to, comments that we have heard so many times before.

“I didn’t see what happened when Eddie Johnson went down the second time, and although I wasn’t very happy with Akinbiyi’s challenge on our goalkeeper the referee didn’t seem to think it was anything so maybe it wasn’t. We never get ourselves involved in those things anyway.”

Steve Cotterill wasn’t happy with the performance and asked if he was disappointed, he replied, “Of course we’re disappointed.”

Talking about the game he said, “I thought in the second half, we had done enough to get a result. Their keeper pulled off some great saves, as well as the one at the death from Gifton there was one from James O’Connor. And Ade should have scored with a header from Garreth O’Connor’s cross.

“If those chances go in we are home and dry almost but to be fair to Crewe the scoreline probably suggests that they were a touch better than us over the ninety minutes and they finished the game strongly.

“We gave away a couple of needless free kicks just before the goal and we’ve just got to make sure we learn from our lessons from today. I thought today our big, strong players weren’t quite as big and strong as they needed to be and some of our footballers didn’t play football when we needed them to.

“I didn’t think we played at all well in the first half, we were a bit too back-to-front too quickly and we spoke about that, but we were better in the second half and we’ve got to make sure we’re better again on Tuesday night.”
