We talk about games that had everything

He saw them take an early lead, one they couldn't extend, before having to hang on in the closing stages. "I thought we were outstanding, particularly in the first half, when we were free flowing and very, very good," said Swans' boss Rodgers.

"Obviously when you only get one goal it leaves it a little bit hairy at the end, and for that persistence, which I spoke about in the week, against a fantastic team in Burnley who are going to be right up there, it was a fantastic three points."

Speaking about the two red cards, Rodgers added: "I thought both sendings off were very, very harsh. Everyone knows that Darren Pratley is a really honest player and he wouldn't have gone down unless he really had to.

"I haven't seen it again, but I thought it was a penalty, so for him to get booked then for that to cost him a red card, it is very, very disappointing. I also thought the second red card was harsh on Mears, it wasn't that sort of game."

Laws eventually saw it as a missed opportunity as Burnley fell to a first defeat of the season. "We talk about games that had everything and that certainly did," he said.

"There was drama, passion, two sendings off and two teams going at it hammer and tong to get a result. What it shows is this is no easy league. Swansea are a good side, they showed that last year.

"I thought we gave them too much respect in that opening 20 minutes but once we got to grips with that we were the more probing side. We should have come in level at half time, but we couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

"The really disappointing thing is we started the second half well, but everything turned on its head with the sending off. We are thinking we have a chance against ten men, but we only had thirty seconds to enjoy it.

"You have to use your head, not your heart, and Tyrone, who has been clattered by Pratley for his red, has gone straight into another challenge which left the referee with no option.

"That's obviously a blow because we have lost a player when we are chasing the game. If we keep 11 v 10, we would have taken something from the game, but unfortunately we never gave ourselves a chance."
