We showed a great deal of determination and quality
Last Updated : 27-Aug-2006 by“The pleasing aspect of the performance was our great character to come back. In the second half we scored an excellent goal but then gave away a worse goal than we did in the first half, but again it was he great character from the players to keep going.”
He thought his side would go on to win it after drawing level for the second time adding: “I fancied us to win the match, but their goalkeeper made a couple of blinding saves. He did this to me at Hull and he's done it again. Overall though, I'll take a point but I know we can do better than this.”
Having seen the Clarets turn in their best overall performance of the season, Steve Cotterill was quiet after the game, handing over the post match conference responsibilities to his assistant Dave Kevan who was pleased despite seeing us twice lose the lead.
“This is very much a point gained, but the manner of the game and the fact that we have gone ahead twice is disappointing because we felt it was a game we could have won. However, Crystal Palace are a very good side and they certainly deserved something from the game.”
Having gone in at half time with a one goal lead the Clarets were hoping to build on that but soon found themselves level and Kevan added: “We would have liked to have weathered the pressure better than we did at the beginning of the second half, but credit to our boys because they bounced back straight away, and it was nice to see Kyle getting a reward for all his hard work.
“As soon as we conceded that goal we feared the worst, but we kicked back and took the game to them again, so in the end we were obviously disappointed. Both of their goals came from headers and we feel we have enough in the side to deal with that type of attack.
“The manager tried to combat that by brining on two six-footers, but in the end it was all credit to Brian Jensen because he has made some good saves to ensure we got that point.”
Coming after the two home defeats Kevan said: “It was important to put up a good performance. We felt that we had something to prove to ourselves and the supporters on the back of the last two results, and to show people that we are a good side.
“It was always going to be a tough game against Crystal Palace, who are a good side, but our lads showed a great deal of determination and a great deal of quality out there and that's just one defeat in five league games now.
“The lads have responded well and if they continue like that, then hopefully we will enjoy a good season.”
