We never said this adventure was going to be easy

Martinez saw his Wigan team take all three points with a 3-1 win and that after the Clarets had taken an early lead and he said after the game: "It's a very tough place to get a win. We all know the record Burnley have got at home, not just this season but over the last few campaigns. So I am really pleased with the overall performance and obviously the result with it.

"Burnley were really sharp at the beginning and we switched off from a throw in but it was great to see the reaction. It was a real test in the first half and I feel that we played our best football in that period after we conceded.

"I also think we were able to finish the game strongly, despite the injuries, and to do that at Turf Moor speaks volumes for the performance of the players."

Owen Coyle pointed to Wigan's first goal as being crucial. "I think if you lose any game it's disappointing," he said. "We had numerous opportunities and started the game really well.

"We conceded a truly bizarre equaliser and my recollection is that Brian came for it and twisted his ankle in the process. You can prepare your team all week, but something like that is uncontrollable.

"I have been there and their player is not to know what's happening. If chances like that are there you have to take them. I'm not so sure if Brian has come, then stopped and pushed off, but there was no danger and that's the galling thing.

"Brian was not my focus after the game, but the physio staff will look at that now and assess the damage and we will go from there."

He continued: "After that incident with Brian perhaps we felt a little sorry for ourselves, but we started the second half really well and Chris Eagles had an unbelievable chance that the keeper saves.

"Their second goal from Rodallega is a terrific striker and then in the next twenty minutes some of our football was fantastic. Nugent came on and made an impact and in the end, although it was disappointing in terms of the result, there were big periods in that performance that is all that we are about.

"The third goal is a big one and we have dropped a man from a set play, which you can't do at this level. But on another day we would have won that game, so we will take our slap and the opinions of others that go with it and bounce back.

"We never said this adventure was going to be easy, far from it. There will be trials and tribulations along the way, but the one thing we have is a work ethic and we know that we can win games at this level.

"We have a massive home game next week and we have to make sure we are ready for it."
