We never got out of the blocks

"We've had three very good performances and results," Irvine said. "But the moment we get carried away this game comes back to bite you. So there will be none of that and it has already been spoken about.

"I'm delighted for the players. They are good players, intelligent, good footballers who are also not afraid to work hard, who realise they've got jobs to do without the ball.

"We've got others sat on the bench and some who can't at this moment even get into the squad. All of them will play an important role for this club I can assure you.

"Of course we will have set backs along the way. This league is so demanding that it is inevitable, but we have bright players who are able to respond to each other and I am confident if we put in the work I know we will get the results we want."

Irvine was asked if he thought that was the perfect performance. "I'm not sure there is such a thing, you are never 100 per cent satisfied," he said. "There was a little period in the second half when I was not happy with us but thankfully the players got control again and finished well.

"I think overall they have been terrific. I felt we were making good progress even during the Everton game but of course you don't get the result that enables that view to be heard. We've still got a long way to go. We know that."

For Sean Dyche it was his biggest defeat since becoming Burnley manager and he was honest enough to admit: "It's not a good afternoon that's for sure. We never got out of the blocks at all today, which is my main disappointment.

"Results can happen like today, particularly at this level of football and you want to perform. We have done so far this season, we've performed in a manner that means you can win games but today that didn't happen.

"Apart from the set pieces I don't think Tom had an awful lot to do. Don't get me wrong we weren't playing well but we managed to keep them at bay.

"I thought if we'd have got to half time at 1-0 down we can re-shuffle and have an effect but 2-0 down is very different. They score the third and as we all know it's climbing a mountain from there on in.

"Credit to West Brom because there have been a few question marks about them and they've turned it around quickly. They got that performance last week at Tottenham and a 1-0 win.

"There have been question marks here and we've got to respond to them. If you get results then they can quickly build into more results."

Asked about the missing players, Dyche added: "We have a squad, we've built a squad because we needed it and now you can see why. We want those players to come in and effect the game but that didn't quite work today.

"I thought Nathaniel was a positive because he wanted the ball and tried to play. We changed the shape and obviously the changes because we've got injuries to Matt Taylor, David Jones and Dean Marney.

"Of course they're three main midfielders for us but the performance level, th e energy level and the feel of the group wasn't quite there today and we need to learn from it.

"We've only had that once at Swansea when we looked unsure and today we looked super unsure of ourselves and we didn't deliver, it's as simple as that."
