We have to hit the ground running

Whilst Eddie Howe looks forward to his first full season as Burnley manager, his counterpart Sean Dyche is new to the job having stepped up at Vicarage Road following the departure of Malky Mackay to Cardiff.

He's told his players they should have no fear going into the new season and he points to the young players having gained experience during last season.

"The young players who developed last year are slightly older and wiser," Dyche said. "They'll have a better feel for things and we've looked to bring strength around that.

"It's fair to say that we're the underdogs again and people will be writing us off, but I believe in no fear. We're used to it by now and I think it's good fuel. I've played in a few teams that weren't fancied down the years but you can surprise people.

"A lot of that comes from belief within the camp, belief as individuals and belief as a club. Having a 'one club' mentality is very important."

Dyche believed there are similarities between the two clubs. "Burnley is a fantastic challenge for us," he said. "They are a team who have real experience as much as anything, but they are similar to us in the sense that they've had to offload players.

"Burnley are just the same. It's only the really powerful clubs in the Championship who can turn down and secure players for long term big money deals. We can't be a 'cherry-pick' club who can pick who they want, when they want.

"So we've had to wait for some of these deals, let time develop to allow us the chance to move and secure the players that we want.

"We're great believers in getting the lads ready physically and it's great that they've come through pre-season unscathed."

Eddie Howe is all ready. After playing six pre-season games he has his team prepared for Watford and more importantly for the season ahead.

"Sights are set very high," Howe said today. "We're confident in ourselves and the ability of everyone around us and I'm confident we're going to have a good season.

"We have to hit the ground running though. The fans here have been superb in pre-season and hopefully they can really get behind the lads because we need to make this a fortress if we're going to have any joy this year.

"Our home form is so important to us and we want to start in good fashion, so hopefully the crowd will be with us and we can make it difficult for Watford."

Previously as a manager, Howe has see his Bournemouth team play away first game and he added: "It might be a new one for me, starting with a home game, but I think it's good to be at home. You always want your fans with you from day one and you want to try and get that first win on the board.

"Pre-season seems to have gone on a while, but we're pleased to be back in action. Everybody wants the game to start and I'm no different.

"I'm looking forward to the first one and I would just urge the fans to get right behind the players. We need your support and if we are to achieve something here, we can achieve it together."
