We have to build a team and build a team spirit

Palace went into the game having lost at Peterborough a week earlier but never looked back once Jonathan Parr had given them the lead. "I thought it was a performance that merited a win," Freedman said after the game.

"We started well, got on the front foot and made it difficult for Burnley to play. I felt we regained possession and used it well and created a number of chances. So overall I'm delighted with the performance and the result.

"The first goal was a good move that came from pressing the ball. We used the ball well and created opportunities throughout the game. It was good for Jonathan to make his home debut and get a goal. I thought he performed very well, as did most of them."

Freedman added: "I thought it was a good team performance and I said that to the lads. Last week we had time to work on it defensively and looked a little bit better organised. They have taken on board what we are trying to do and how we want to play the game."

It was another difficult day for Eddie Howe and he made an immediate call for unity after a poor performance following the sudden departure of Danny Fox had left his squad even further depleted.

"The problem with the summer we have had is the players we have here have seen other players leave," Howe admitted after the Palace defeat. It's incredibly difficult at the start of a new season mentally for players to accept that.

"There is a picking up to do and now we need to get some incomings quickly to lift the squad because it has been a tough few days. It's no good me whining or making excuses. We have to build a new squad. We are in transition and I don't think there is any doubt about that.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us. We have some very good players here, but we have to build a team and build a team spirit and that's difficult at this stage of the season because we are in the very early stages.

"We are having to build in the season, which is hardly idea, so we have to be realistic. We've lost a lot of players and right now we need to stick together as a club."

He continued: "My plans here are long term. I am looking long term and hopefully everyone can stick with us and we can come through this and out the other side.

"In terms of numbers we are very light and we need to bring some in. Things are progressing much slower than I wanted, but that's how these things pan out. We will get there and hopefully get the ones we want to build a good team."

On the game itself, he said: "We were knocking at the door, but the second goal meant it was an uphill battle and we need to do better defensively. They were poor goals to concede and there are areas for us to work on, that's for sure."
