We deserved it from start to finish

Burnley had come back from behind to beat Preston but North End boss Alan Irvine admitted that his side hadn't played well enough despite having the boost of that first goal. "It was very disappointing from our point of view," Irvine admitted.

"Without playing all that well I thought we got ourselves into a fantastic position, we were a goal up and looking quite comfortable and we managed to lose a game when really we were in a position where we could have won it.

"We didn't pass the ball well and we didn't create too many openings. Burnley defended well when they had to but we didn't ask them enough questions."

Irvine though strangely put our equaliser down to them having just been forced into making a substitution after Michael Hart was stretchered off. He said: "We weren't organised properly, the loss of Michael Hart didn't have us in the normal positions that we would be in when we are defending a free kick in that area that then allowed Joey Gudjonsson the space to bring the ball forward.

"It was a fantastic strike, there's no question about that, but we wouldn't normally have defended in a way which would have allowed him to get the ball in those circumstances."

Just like everyone else inside Turf Moor, Owen Coyle was talking about Joey Gudjonsson's goal after we'd completed the victory. On the win he said: "I don't just think we deserved it in the end, we deserved it from start to finish.

"We dominated the game and could have scored as early as the first minute. We had the hammer blow of conceding a goal and at that point it would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves because we were so on top.

"But the lads showed that belief, hunger and desire to score goals and Joey's strike was something very special. He's capable of that and we encourage him to hit them on a daily basis because when he does catch them right they are unstoppable."

With the Clarets level at half time Coyle thought we might be in for a tough second half with us having played in midweek whilst Preston had not played since the previous Saturday. He said: "We thought the second half would be a tall order trying to do the same again because we had a tough game in midweek, but anything but.

"We carried it on and scored a very good second goal. The tendency then is to sit back and protect what you have, but we were urging the lads to go and get the next one.

"If someone had offered us 3-1 at the start, against a team flying at the top of the league, then we would have grabbed it. But I felt we merited it and now we have a massive game against Watford on Tuesday."
