We couldn't have foreseen the start we had

Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock, recalling our 1-0 win against them last season, said today: "Last season at Burnley was the poorest away performance of the season, or Coventry could have been worse. This is a new team and I am hoping the effects of Burnley last year won't be with them. We wait and see what reaction we get tomorrow.

"Away from home is difficult enough, especially when you have the kind of away record we have got and it is up to us now to turn heads."

Sturrock is aware that he's coming up against an experienced side. "They have just signed Russell Anderson [he was on loan at Plymouth last season]," he added. "Graham Alexander at right back is an international player. Steven Caldwell and Anderson have played internationally.

"They have got Kevin McDonald who is a very exciting talent from Scotland, although I don't know if he is getting a game or not. They have Eagles, who they paid £1m plus for and Paterson was also £1m plus, although they did get £4m from the Kyle Lafferty sale to Rangers.

"I am looking forward to the game. It is going to be a challenge because we are coming off a big defeat. Not a big defeat as far as the result, but a big defeat performance wise. I want a positive reaction. I want to be upbeat. I was a bit morose after the game on Saturday, which was a frustration of mine because I should not let things like that get me down."

It was Sandy Stewart speaking to the media ahead of this game rather than Owen Coyle and Sandy said: "We are looking forward to Saturday after a positive result on Tuesday night.

"It would be great to go into the international break with a first league win under our belt and a home game against Plymouth gives us that opportunity. But we know it is going to be a tough game."

Discussing the start to the season he added: "I think with the players we have, we couldn't have foreseen the start we had. It did give us a rethink, but over the course of the last fortnight Owen, Steve Davis and myself have worked on that and there has been a lot of time spent on the training ground.

"Much of it has been repetitive stuff, but it was stuff that needed to be fixed and hopefully we are reaping the dividends. The players are probably bored to death with it now, but we needed an improvement and I think we have seen that.

"We have changed the system a little in the middle of the part to have Graham Alexander sit in there and that encourages both Chris McCann and Kevin McDonald to get forward a little bit more.

"They can do that with their fitness levels because they are young men with great energy levels. Chris in particular showed that on Tuesday night, when he was a goal threat every time he got close to goal."

He added: "As with anything, results give you confidence and then you start making those runs you perhaps didn't previously make. But there's certainly more to come.

Plymouth are probably like ourselves, trying to find a bit of form. But they have a lot of experienced players and they will be smarting from some of their results this season. They will be looking for three points too, so we really need to just try to keep it clean at the back and create a few more opportunities and hopefully take them."
