We can't take these games lightly

Both Alex MacDonald and Chris Iwelumo scored for the second successive game and they were joined on the scoresheet tonight by Charlie Austin who netted his first Burnley goal.

"You always want your strikers to have a good pre-season and score goals and so I'm delighted for all of them," he said.

"Charlie in particular will get huge confidence from that. I have never doubted his ability. Charlie is a goalscorer and a fantastic finisher who has been champing at the bit.

"He wanted to play against Altrincham but I feel we needed to protect his shoulder. I'm aware those type of injuries can be problematic, so that extra few days helped. The goal will also help Charlie get acclimatised and tuned in to the way we want him to play.

"It's difficult when you come from a lower league club to make the transition and usually that can take three or four months to bed in. I think Charlie and Marvin Bartley have benefited from having a pre-season."

Looking at the game overall, he added: "As pre-season games go we were impressive and we take a lot of out that. I thought our mentality was right and we closed down extremely well from the kick off. We passed the ball extremely well and scored three good goals.

"We can't take these games lightly. They are important because hopefully they are going to get us in the form that we can take into the season."
