We cannot keep shooting ourselves in the foot

Laws, who could well have been in the home dug out had he been given permission to speak to us in November 2007, continued his remarkable unbeaten run at Turf Moor with this second four goal assault on the Clarets this season.

"I thought we were excellent at both ends of the pitch," he said. "We carved them open at times with our football and we defended well, in numbers at times.

"If you're talking about critical moments in games then the save that Lee Grant made at the end of the first half was one of them. It had deflected off one of our players and it was a world class save. You need moments like that from your players if you are going to win games."

He added: "We got the opening goal which we richly deserved and we were very unlucky not to have got a second goal because Tudgay came very close to getting another goal before half time.

"We needed to be calm in the second half and defend well but I thought we were a little bit ropy for the first ten minutes after half time. We recovered from that though and got our second goal and after that we won it emphatically.

"There were some great goals and I was delighted for the likes of Leon Clarke. I have been one of his biggest critics, he's got all the tools and he doesn't always bring them out of the box but when he does that's what you get."

Owen Coyle had kept faith with the same starting eleven as in the two previous games that had both ended in draws, but he's now set to ring the changes after he pointed the finger at the poor defending.

He said: "There's no doubt we were the better team in the early part of the game and Sheffield Wednesday scored with their first foray up the park. But it was poorly defended, as were each and every one of the goals.

"It's not rocket science that if you are going to make individual errors like that you are going to get punished. The goals were horrendous mistakes and we would love to strengthen in the defensive area, but it's not been possible because of finance so we have to carry on with what we've got.

"Today thought it wasn't good enough, it's as simple as that. I think both sides had an abundance of chances, but we cannot continue to be looking to score two, three or four goals every week to win a game of football. We cannot keep shooting ourselves in the foot and defensively we had a really poor game.

"We will come back in to work on Monday and be ready to go ahead of a massive game now at Blackpool on Tuesday. That is my focus and I think it's fair to say there will be a few changes for that game as we look to get a bit of freshness back into the team.

"We only go from game to game and we have to refocus and show the pride and belief that we have and hopefully keep it tight at the back."
