We can have a good weekend now

Fair enough, both are concerned about their own team’s performances but such differing viewpoints as we got from Mark McGhee and Steve Cotterill after our win at Brighton really do take some understanding.

The fact is that McGhee is basically talking crap – and that has even been confirmed by a number of Brighton web sites who hardly saw it as their own manager did.

“It wouldn’t have been as tough had we had Adam Virgo and Danny Cullip,” said McGhee after watching his side go down to another home defeat. “They would have been in our box heading those corners away and we would have posed much more of a threat than we did without them.

“The only way we were going to lose the game was from a set piece. We were missing two of our three main headers of the ball and we have nobody to replace them. That meant we weren’t as effective on our own set pieces and that we were in danger from their good set pieces and that was how we succumbed.”

If anyone actually thought that was believable he then stunned everyone who actually watched the game by adding, “I thought for half an hour we annihilated them with football, but maybe there wasn’t enough on the end of it – but we know that. That’s why we are set up the way we are.”

I think this period of annihilation was the period when the Clarets twice hit the Brighton woodwork, had two efforts cleared off the line and a clear penalty for handball turned down. Funny McGhee must have missed all that.

He went on, “We weren’t envisaging a game of many chances. I hoped we would make one and take one, but I am not going home totally demoralised.”

He then concluded with some more nonsense that we won’t bother with.

Did the Brighton fans agree with him? I would suggest not given the following:

The visitors controlled the match after Brighton's initial promise and they should have been in front by half-time.” – Brighton Mad

“In time honoured fashion it took Burnley about twenty minutes of the first half to suss out that Albion posed no threat, and they became suitably more confident from that point, hitting the bar and the post in the first half.” – Planet Albion

And now to a more sensible view from the Clarets boss who admitted, “That was a great win for us. We did well today and created a lot of chances, particularly in the first half when we could have been 3-0 up.

“I’ve said it before, but we do need to be more ruthless and one of these days we’ll get a few goals against someone.

“It is the first time we have won two games back-to-back and we are delighted with that, it is a big plus for us.”

Talking about his reshaped defence in the absence of John McGreal he added, “I thought Gary Cahill and Frank Sinclair were magnificent today and it is all credit to them. We weren’t sure if Frank was going to play until about one o’clock. It was touch and go, but he wanted to play and so we risked him because it is probably a week too soon for him.

“Brian Jensen deserved his clean sheet and I thought Tony Grant’s set pieces were immaculate today. They were on the button and they to be right today in the poor conditions. Robbie wasn’t at his best, he can do a lot better, but it was a great finish from him.

“We can have a good trip back and a good weekend now.”
