We are making this a really tough place to come

There was no good fortune for Powell, whose side won 1-0 at Turf Moor last season, and after the game he said: "We were obviously playing against a side that are playing with confidence but our preparation, our game plan, was working. We were definitely in the game and then a moment of quality from them, and Ings is confident, and we go in at 1-0 down.

"We had to make a change through concussion with one of our players and just when I'm about to make a change they nick the second goal so then we're always chasing although we had incidents in the game where we could have got ourselves back in it but sadly it wasn't to be."

He thought the game was level pegging until the second goal, and added: "Even though a goal down we did have a lot of the ball. Of course you need to convert that and create chances. We had one or two but they scored a second goal and then we're on the back foot and then we're chasing and they score a goal near the end and that was that.

"We were taught a lesson today in the end by a side that is obviously playing well. We're at the different end of the spectrum to Burnley at the minute. They're playing with confidence and they hurt us with that result.

"We're in a tough situation at present but we'll have to find a way through it. All we can do is prepare for the next game. We can't change any event that has happened previously."

Dyche saw his team remain in second place after this latest win and said after the game: "It is to be enjoyed, for sure, and it's still early days in a long, hard season. But there is no reason why this can't continue.

"I chatted to the lads during the week and told them there is nothing that says you don't actually keep winning. The stats suggest you won't, but that doesn't mean you have to lose a game because you don't.

"I said to them the mentality is always to win, it's as simple as that. That doesn't guarantee wins by any means, and there are some freak things that can happen in games and sometimes when you don't perform and the opposition does. Our mindset is clearly focused on going out there every time and winning, and the players are running with that."

He continued: "There are good things and some challenges here, but we have always tried to be open and honest about what we are trying to achieve with the finances and the fact we have a small squad.

"Nobody is trying to make excuses but I think Burnley is, in my opinion, coming back to what I thought it was and that is a town that takes care of its club. Everyone here is a custodian. I am just the person who manages that, but we want to keep that positivity. Even if things don't go our way it's the way forward if we can maintain that believe as a group."

Dyche saw his strikers bag all the goals again, and not for the first time he had words of praise for Sam Vokes who scored the second and third. "Sam is still a work in progress, but he is the fittest he has ever been and he is a young man who is earning his spurs now," Dyche enthused.

"We spoke to him last year because he made it clear he wanted to be valued and wanted a home. He has travelled around a bit and done well and not so well at different stages of his career, but we told him there was a home here.

"We believed in him and there are a lot of good things going on in his game. I think he has taken massive strides forward because he is now finding the goals and putting in a consistency of performance.

"There's a massive team effort and a good work ethic behind that. When players enjoy what they do and are in an environment and culture that suggests professionalism and detail, then I think they will go with that.

"That gives them a freedom, and they know they have a base to go back to where they know what is expected of them. There is a good feel about the group and never more so than now.

"We are making this a really tough place to come and we're aware that teams are going to come here with different tactics to try and stop us and get something out of the game, but we are showing good signs at the moment and long may that continue.

"I don't want to get too greedy because we are performing well, scoring goals and winning games, but in the first half I felt we were a nearly side. Don't get me wrong, we went 1-0 up and probably deserved to, but we certainly didn't move it as quickly through the units as we could have.

"We had a word at half time and I'm pleased to say they went and delivered in the second half. I don't think Tom has had too much to do, so I'm delighted."
