We are grateful to be in the next round

Grimsby boss Alan Buckley saw his side go in front in extra-time before the Clarets equalised through Andy Gray before the shoot out and he was more than disappointed with the result, although not his team's performance.

"I'm really gutted for the players to lose on penalties when I thought that for nearly the whole two hours of football we were the better team. We passed it well, we created good chances, and we kept possession well and frustrated Burnley.

"The players did everything I could have asked of them. Whichever player was out there and whichever position they were playing, they did really well for us. I felt that once we had scored one we would score another. Their goalkeeper made a fantastic save from Northy [Danny North]. He took it out of the top corner and tipped it onto the bar.

"I felt we looked the team that was going to win the game. There was a good understanding throughout the team, the work rate was really amazing and I'm really pleased with what they have done."

Clarets' boss Steve Cotterill was just pleased to have won through after a difficult night at Blundell Park. "For me it was Grimsby's night," he said. "They played some great football and made it very difficult for us, and we are grateful to be in the next round because night's like this are tailor made for a cup exit. We were on a hiding to nothing. You don't get any credit for winning but I suppose you get a little bit of stick if you get beat.

"We have made those nine changes and in the second half it livened up. In that second half we thought we could have gone on and won it within 20 to 25 minutes and then at the death they could and should have won it.

"All in all I thought it was a fair result and the only surprise with the penalties is that we missed one. And the last time Brian made saves in a penalty shoot out we went on and had a good run, so maybe that will continue."
