We are going to have to tell him not to make a tackle

Forest hadn't won in nine and their boss Billy Davies was boosted with this win which re-ignites their play off hopes. He highlighted the goals of substitute David McGoldrick at the end along with the performance of their man of the match Brendan Maloney.

He said: "Brendan deserves great credit. It was nice to see him come in and handle it really, really well and I'm delighted for David McGoldrick that he has got a couple of goals for himself and the team.

"I thought we just had to be patient in the second half. We created a host of chances and should have scored more goals but how can I fault this team? They are giving us everything they've got and working very hard for the cause.

"We needed the three points to hopefully kick start us again and you never know we just might end up hitting a good run at the right time.

"It will do them the world of good. They are a young side and you could see in the first half they were a little bit edgy, were a little unsure at times on how to control their game and the pace of the game but it's a great three points and we'll keep working away."

Davies was asked about the red card shown to Marvin Bartley that reduced Burnley to 10 men on 32 minutes. "I've got to say I was nervous about the sending off because 10 men aren't easy to play against.

"I'm not sure about whether or not it was a sending off. It looked quite nasty from where I was sitting but I would have to see it again."

The little man might not have been sure but Eddie Howe certainly was. "We feel we were on the wrong end of a decision," the angry Burnley manager said after the game.

"I thought we were in total control until the sending off. We asked the players to be brave tonight and I thought they were. Unfortunately the sending off changed the game and my take is that I didn't think it was a yellow card, let alone red.

"I stand to be corrected, but I felt Marv has gone in honestly for a full blooded tackle. and I was surprised at the red card and I didn't think the reaction of the Forest players helped. The tackle didn't warrant that type of reaction and it almost guided the referee to the red card.

"We ask Marv to win 50-50 balls and if he is getting sent off for that we are going to have to tell him not to make a tackle."

Speaking about the performance, Howe said: "I think we showed a little bit of passion tonight and showed that we care. I said in the last game that's what the Burnley supporters want to see and I felt the players put a terrific shift in.

"Ultimately it wasn't our night, but if we can repeat that type of performance and endeavour we will win a lot of games.

"The games are going to come thick and fast now, but we showed signs of a recovery today and I hope that continues.

"Although you have to look short term, there is a long term picture and I want to sit in the dug out knowing that my team is going to produce week in and week out . We haven't had that in the last couple of weeks and that's worried me.

"But I think we had that today and that's the consistency levels we have to hit in terms of work rate, enthusiasm and desire. That's a starting point and now we have to go and match that."
