We are delighted to get this monkey off our back

It was all down to the penalty decision for Forest boss Colin Calderwood, and he firmly believed that referee Clive Penton got the decision wrong. "I think he probably got it wrong," Calderwood said of it, "I've looked at the video and I don't think it was a penalty on the day. It seems a wee it unjust."

He was happy enough with his players and their performance though, adding: "It was a good performance and you would want to back that up with taking points from the game, which we haven't got.

"We've got to look back at things we did well but two set plays have given them the chance to score their goals. But I can't be too harsh on the players, they put in a great effort and there was a good response in the second half especially.

"The goals stalled our momentum. They both came at times when we looked capable of creating chances and causing problems for Burnley."

Burnley finally got the win that everyone wanted. Manager Owen Coyle had been under pressure from some supporters after the difficult start to the season so it was no surprise that there was a delighted manager after the game who was able to reflect on his three substitutions during a ten minute spell in the second half.

"Sometimes substitutions work and sometimes they don't, but I felt those three gave us a fresh impetus in the game and in the end we stood up to everything Forest had to offer," Coyle said after the game.

"Ade, Joey and Robbie gave us a new lease of life and that's what this game is all about. It's not about eleven players, it is about a collective group and they have showed that spirit today.

"It's very easy, when you have had terrific careers like Robbie, Ade and Joey, to feel a little bit out of it when they don't play. But they have shown that spirit among the group and we are delighted to get this monkey of a first win off our back.

"These players are a terrific group and we really should be sitting there now with nine points. The margins in this division are minimal and so it's proved today."

On the game Coyle added: "We knew it was going to be difficult because Nottingham Forest have a fantastic home record and not many teams will come here and pick up three points. But I certainly felt, over the ninety minutes, that we merited it.

"Forest had possession at certain times and at one each their tails were up, but we had some terrific opportunities to score. There were a host of positives to take and we knew that win was only around the corner. And it's nice timing because this gives us something to build on against Blackpool on Tuesday."

The manager admitted that both Kevin McDonald and Martin Paterson were withdrawn during the second half because he felt they were leg weary having been away on international duty. He said: "It's just something we'll have to monitor now when they come back, to see if they still have the freshness and spark."
