Tuesday night with the floodlights on

John Sheridan has seen his side go top of League One with three wins and win their first round tie on penalties against Rochdale, and ahead of tonight's game he said: "People need games and the opportunity is there to play one or two different players.

"I've got a big squad and that gives us the opportunity to rest some of the lads and a couple of others who have picked up knocks. The games come thick and fast and it'll be good to put the players who come in up against a Championship side. But no matter what team I put out it will be good enough to go there and win the game.

"Burnley are a good team who play decent football and we know a little bit about what to expect from last year. It's a good test for us against a Championship side who will probably go into the game as favourites. But we will be looking to go there and give a good account of ourselves, and the lads should be full of confidence after four great results.

"We'll be keeping our feet on the ground, as we know it will be a difficult game and it is a long season."

Owen Coyle saw his side keep a first league clean sheet of the season at Crystal Palace and is now looking to take that on into tonight's game. "There was a mixture of emotions on the way back from Palace, but there were positives to take from the game.

"I thought we scored a perfectly good goal and I certainly can't see a handball from Chris McCann having watched it back. So hopefully that little bit of luck will turn for us because we were looking as if we weren't going to concede a goal.

"Now we have to build on that and make sure when the chances do present themselves, as they did, we take one or two."

On the game ahead he admitted he was looking at possibly making changes and said: "There's not much time to recover and it is a very difficult tie. Oldham are absolutely flying at the top of League One and will come here in good fettle, feeling they can cause an upset.

"We realise a number of Championship sides were knocked out in the last round, and we want to make sure that doesn't happen to us. They will be confident and regardless of what level you play at, if you have that, you feel you can win games.

"We'll just look after ourselves though, knowing we have a building block and a base to build on and move on. We have good players at the club and we want them to show that when they cross the white line; to pass and move that ball, make sure we make no silly mistakes, get in the ascendancy and kick on from there."

Coyle added: "I've always loved cup competition. They provide prestige the longer you stay in them and equally there are financial rewards. If we were to progress past Oldham who's to say you won't pull a plum draw, so we want to stay in this competition as long as we can.

"People can feel the early rounds are quite tedious, but nothing is further from the truth and that's why we love football. Tuesday night with the floodlights on, a cup tie and an opportunity to progress and get among the so called glamour clubs."
