Today was a very good sign

Saunders saw his side go down 2-1, a result that left them on the brink of successive relegations, and said: "Whatever happens to us, whether we stay up or go down, I am 100 percent confident that I can give the fans some happy Sundays. Whatever happens I have got to sort the club out from top to bottom and change the mentality.

"I've got to get the mentality right in the club and to do that you can't just sign any old players to play for Wolves. To play for a big club you've got to be a certain type of player and you've got to be able to play under pressure. Man United have pressure games every week and certain players can deal with it and certain players can't. We've got to sign the right players."

Looking at what is an almost certain relegation, he added: "It has happened to Forest, to Leeds, to Southampton. What happens normally is that you have a couple of bad years, a losing mentality sets in, then you change your manager, then you lose your best players, Fletcher and Jarvis and people like that.

"The players who are still here are disappointed that nobody has come in and taken them. Players can't get their heads round going down the league. A new manager come in, there's uncertainty all around.

"New players come in and the manager can't get the team to gel together and before you know it in the Championship you can't win a game and you find yourself playing under pressure for a big club in front of those supporters and you have to hold your nerve.

"You have to be able to stand up and get results. I walked into a mess at Doncaster. The team hadn't won for six months. I had to sort that club out and I'm pleased they've won the league today. That's what can happen."

Dyche saw the Clarets record a seventh away win of the season, a total bettered only twice in the previous ten years and was enthusing about the performance when he spoke after the game.

"I am pleased we have found a way to navigate our way through one of the toughest Championships I can ever remember and I've told the players they will reflect on days like this and grow from them," he said.

"People forget we have a young side and it is about the development. You develop from experience and these last few games have been a huge learning curve, but they have manned up today. I have questioned them on that, I'll be honest, but today, without a shadow of a doubt, they certainly manned up when it counted."

He added: "Footballers are only human, but the calmness in the occasions is what pleased me most and we went about it the right way. I think everyone knows it's been a nervy couple of weeks and we came here today to a club with all the expectation on them.

"We knew we had to deal with that, and we did with a good mixture of football, solid organisation, especially when we went down to ten me, and a little luck when we needed it.

"There was the mixture of good energy, good organisation and flexible play and that's the mix I am searching for. It's not easy to find every week, but we showed good signs of that today and I am just do pleased for everyone and the supporters in general.

"The big thing now is this gives us the chance to rebuild. We haven't brought a player in and we are working with a group of players who have been flexible in their thinking, but they have done well overall and today was a very good sign in the way they dealt with the game."
