Today is about the supporters

Home boss Gary Bowyer revealed the hurt after goals from Jason Shackell and Danny Ings turned the game our way, and he wasn't happy that his side had lost to the promotion chasing Clarets.

"I thought the result was a bit harsh on us," he said. "We are bitterly disappointed, there is a lot of hurt in there.

"The start of the second half and Jordan Rhodes goes through and it hits the post, if it goes in then it is game over. You are talking fine margins, we could have been two goals up.

"That said we are disappointed with the manner of their two goals. They were very direct, they kept pumping balls into our box and we are disappointed with how we defended those two. We have to mark better from the set play."

Bowyer added: "You have to look at how strongly we finished at the end. Rudy (Gestede) has had a couple of chances, Lowey (Jason Lowe) as well and Liam Feeney has put a couple of good balls in.

"We kept going, we kept showing the fight, but we are disappointed. If we'd have won today, and we got ourselves into a good position to do, we'd have been three points off the play-offs."

Sean Dyche, as is so often the case, got his words absolutely right. "Today is about the supporters," he said, before adding: "I thought the whole team deserved it and I'm delighted for the fans because of the 35 years.

"You see a lot of people, like me, come and go from the game but today is about the supporters having something to adhere to and something to believe in once again after 35 years.

"The group of players and staff were all desperate for things to change, so I am really pleased for that and for the board as well, they've all been Burnley fans since they were boys. It is certainly an enjoyable feeling."

Dyche praised his players for  coming from behind to win the game, and said: "I think the mentality has been there for all to see. I said to the lads at half time the marker is one goal and the game will change. And it did.

"After we scored they found it difficult, we were always on the front foot and always looking to nick another one.

"I've made it clear all the way through our journey so far that I believe in the players. Not just the quality they've got but I believe they understand how we are trying to play as a group.

"The physicality today again was absolutely exceptional. They'll go hard this group, until however long it takes to achieve what we can achieve."

Finally, speaking on those goals that ended this long wait for a win against our fiercest rivals, he said: "Shacks has done brilliant, thrown his head in where it hurts and he's got his reward for the team. He got one here last year and it was a very brave header, just his natural reaction.

"I must say it was a fantastic cross from Ross Wallace, we know he's got that quality. The cross is a horrible one for keepers because it is one that just sucks them off their line."

And on the winner: "I thought Ingsy was exceptional with his work ethic today, he just kept going and going and going. The demand that he's got on himself and for us as a group is absolutely first class.

"Some strikers if it's not quite happening for you will switch off, but he doesn't. He keeps going and I thought he got his rewards today. He is a fantastic person as well as a player."
