This is a big, big win for us

They call him Moaning Mowbray in the West Midlands and it is no surprise. Fair enough, he had every reason to be upset the last time he was at Burnley with the sending off of Paul McShane, but on this occasion he was behaving like a spoilt child on the touchline whilst his after match comments regarding the penalty did him no favours.

"It was a typical opening day game, it was very hurly-burly and kick and rush," he said after seeing his side leave Turf Moor pointless for the second time in just a handful of games, adding: "The match was very similar to the game here in April, when we managed to lose from a winning position.

"When Burnley get a head of steam up they've got a lot of big lads. They are a very direct side and can put you under a lot of pressure. But we'll move on, I'm not in the excuses business and as the season goes on we'll be fine, I'm sure of that.

"I'm not going to stand here and make excuses about new players and having a new team. The team will be fine. This is what we've got, this is what we're going ahead with and I'm looking forward to the season. I think we've got a lot of talent in the team and I'm sure we'll win plenty of football matches.

"There were plenty of good signs in the first half. We controlled the game reasonably well, created chances and scored one fabulous goal. A lack of concentration cost us their first goal which again was very similar to one of the goals we conceded here last season.

"We made life difficult for ourselves by conceding so soon after half time. That gave them a bit of impetus. We didn't really function in the second half and it turned into a bit of a scrap. We've got to be better than we were in the second half."

Now Mowbray is not in the excuses business, so here goes with his comments on our winner from the penalty spot. "It doesn't matter what I think about the penalty decision but the officials seemed to disagree with each other all day. They kept overruling each other. On the penalty, the referee did not give it. He played on and the other official was pretty adamant he was going to try to get one right today. Whether he did or he didn't, I don't know, but it was given. What more can I say?"

There was certainly one happy manager after the game. "I am absolutely delighted," said Steve Cotterill. "Albion will still be there our there about at the end of the season, so this is a big, big win for us. We always thought we would have to score two goals against West Brom because it is very difficult to keep a clean sheet against them.

"It took us a little while to get to grips with it, but the longer the game went on I thought we were excellent, not only matching them but going on to win the game. At half time that took a lot of doing, so all credit to the players. They were immense."

On the winner he added: "I thought it was a nailed on penalty. Ade caused them no end of problems. Sometimes when a team is squeezing you up you need power and pace and time and time again he got behind them. Once you have that threat, teams are very wary of squeezing up and that gives your midfielders more time on the ball."

He was happy about his two debutants. "Gabor's save in the 91st minute was absolutely first class, and the way he took the ball in the corner of the area takes so much pressure off your players.

"It was the same with Stephen Jordan, he was another who was first class. Obviously for debutants it is a little more difficult, but all the lads were first class."

The manager also confirmed that captain Steven Caldwell was brought off after tweaking a hamstring.
