This club is in transition at the moment

Reading had gone into the match top and without a point dropped at home all season and their fans in the days leading up to the match had been predicting a three goal win. It wasn’t the case and their manager Steve Coppell was quick to point out that they hadn’t done enough to break us down.

“When we’re at home it should be about us and it is down to teams like ourselves to break a solid defence unit like Burnley down,” Coppell said after the game.

“But they were very, very good at what they did and they made it hard. If we’d got a goal early on it might have been a different game.”

He was quick to point out that the disallowing of the Reading goal for handball was a correct decision, “It wasn’t the referee but the linesman who saw the handball but it was only one hand,” joked the Reading boss.

Looking forward to the international break he added, “I couldn’t have asked any more of the players in the hectic seven match period that has just gone. I think we have always been positive and tried to go forward and create things.

“It has been a heavy load on the players and not it is time for them to have a rest and a pint of lager and we’ll chop and change the programme for the next week.”

He ended by making mention of Glen Little, the former Claret who came on as a substitute. “He played for the reserves in midweek and managed seventy minutes. I would have preferred not to use him today, but playing against his old team I thought he was worth bringing on.”

Again Steve Cotterill was more than happy with the way the Clarets played in what was another tough game.

“I thought the lads were terrific today, he said. “We defended well as a unit, right from Robbie Blake, and we showed the right level of commitment in everything we did.

“This club is in transition at the moment and we need to start somewhere and that was another good point for us.

Reading are a very good side and they have some great players, but I thought we matched them throughout and we could have even got a goal and snatched it at the end.

“I think we had three good chances in the second half and if we could have had a few chances earlier in the game we could have got a goal.”

He explained the absence of Tony Grant by adding, “We had to change it a little because Tony Grant came down with flu last night and we’d trained on Friday afternoon. But I thought Micah Hyde did very well in the second half, better than he was in the first.

“But they have all done well today though and it was a good performance. The lads will have a well deserved few days off now and we can go into it on the back of this good result.”
