They don't seem phased by it all

It looked very much an end of season game throughout and Gillingham hardly looked a decent First Division side but they like the Clarets have been struggling recently to get results and are in their worst run since promotion.

Manager Andy Hessenthaler, again ruled out with injury, admitted that his side deserved no more than the defeat that came their way although did highlight the number of players out through injury.

"The most disappointing thing for me was the two goals we gave away were from set pieces. With the first one goalkeeper Vince Bartram has got to do better and we have got to deal with the ball coming back into the box.

"The second was disappointing because people didn’t so their jobs and if you don’t do your job you get punished and that was the case with the second goal.

"There weren’t too many clear cut chances for either side really and I thought we had enough of the ball in the first half and could have done a lot better with it than we did. We didn’t do enough with the football when we had it in that first half and could have done a lot better with it than we did.

"And we huffed and puffed in the second half. If we had taken a little bit more care with the ball individually then we may have caused them more problems – but we didn’t and it is as simple as that.

"Sometimes for effort you cannot knock my players but today the quality of our passing at times was poor."

Hessenthaler, like Stan, gave some of his youngsters and opportunity and added,

"Mama Sidibe was substituted to give one of the youngsters a run out. He wasn’t having the best of days and if I am being honest he was poor. In fact if you look at it there weren’t really any good performances out there individually other than Danny Spiller and I thought Paul Smith worked his socks off.

"All in all it’s been a frustrating afternoon on top of a frustrating couple of weeks. We have got to get on with it. We have 270 minutes of football left and we have got to keep going. I don’t like it, the supporters don’t like it, the chairman certainly doesn’t like it and the players don’t like it.

"We haven’t been in this position since I have been doing the job but you have to take it on the chin. We need to re-group and prepare for Monday."

Stan was happy enough after seeing the Clarets pick up another three points after targeting a top half finish.

"It was a good performance by the lads. We’ve played well in the last four games really but haven’t had much luck but today we were good and I’m quite pleased," Stan said after the game.

He praised the youngsters and highlighted the unique talent of Matt O’Neill, "Matty has a fantastic long throw on him and it is difficult to defend against so we will be taking advantage of that when we can.

"But I thought the young lads did very well again and it was nice for the crowd to see them. Matty and Chappy have played in three or four games now and they don’t seem phased by it all. It was good to see young Rasa and Wainey get a run out too."

There was another injury though, this time to Paul Weller and Stan added,

"Paul has injured his hamstring and I won’t know any more about it until tomorrow when we start to prepare for Monday’s game at Forest. Dean West did his groin and he was close whilst Dimitri Papadopoulos was also close to being fit."
