And the new boss was happy enough with the performance and thought we deserved better from the game than a 2-1 defeat.

“I thought we played some good football,” said the Burnley boss. “Their goalkeeper was very good and without him we could have scored five or six goals.

“We did give away two cheap goals but we had some good chances our selves and played some good football.

“There’s still loads of things to work on but we are only two weeks into pre-season and the players all worked really well.”

He admitted that the work done in training had been geared up to getting the players fitness levels up and added, “We haven’t done anything on them in terms of scoring goals or finishing and haven’t even worked on a corner yet – just pure fitness work to now.

“You have to get the players to the best possible fitness levels before you start on the tactical and technical stuff.”

On his team selection he said, “I mixed it up and I wanted to have a look at Graham Branch in central midfield. I thought he did very well there. It is important to have a player like him who can play in a few positions even if they don’t always like it. He’s quick, strong, has two good feet and can head it.

“I thought Michael Duff was excellent, he was good in most things he did as was Richard Chaplow in the second half when he moved the ball a lot quicker.”

And finally on the trialists, “It is always difficult assessing them and it is difficult for them. You don’t want to get carried away with one good performance and give them contracts and then all of a sudden they drop off. You’ve got to be careful.”
