There is no magic wand

Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough, who replaced Nigel Adkins earlier this season, has seen them drop into the relegation positions and a win could see them out of that bottom three by tomorrow night.

Baraclough is very much hoping they play better than they did at Millwall recently in front of the Sky cameras where they were beaten 3-0. "That was probably the first time we disappointed on live television for a good while to be honest. Hopefully that's a one off," he said.

Looking towards tomorrow's game he added: "We're in front of our own fans and we need to go and put a good show on. We beat Burnley a few weeks ago and we'll go into the game in high spirits. They've got a new manager now in Eddie Howe and their players will be looking to prove themselves.

"When a new manager goes in it gives them an extra spring in their step, but hopefully we'll have too much for them and it's something we've got to be aware of. They will come out all guns firing and we've got to be ready for that challenge.

"We have a chance to do the double over Burnley and that will be a great feat. It was a hard working performance down at Burnley. Everybody played their part, we took our chances and put in probably one of our most accomplished performances of the season.

"We must take heart from that fact and learn from the mistakes of the last couple of weeks. We need to kick start our season and gain some confidence at home. A win on Saturday is definitely needed for us. It would give us confidence and we can build on something.

"A win would mean we go into these games against teams around us in great spirits. Most of the games are against teams we've already beaten and that's something encouraging for us to take into them.

"As part of your preparation for these games you look into those wins and ask why did we win them, how did we win them and build confidence from the fact that we've already defeated them. If we can win them again then it will certainly improve our position because it's against teams around us in the table."

It's game number one for Howe and it means a new start for every member of the squad. "It's a clean slate for everyone," confirmed the new Burnley manager.

"The players start all over again when a new manager comes in and they have to make sure they remain focused and keep their eyes on the big picture and try to get that consistency we have talked about.

"It's difficult to do that and there is no magic wand. It takes hard work on the training pitch, making sure the players are well prepared for the games and hopefully, with the players' ability, we'll be able to go out and win games.

"The season has been a little bit inconsistent. There hasn't been a run of wins, which is what I am sure everybody wants and we will certainly be trying to do.

"But it is a difficult league and there are a lot of strong teams in it and we have three away games coming up, so we have a difficult start and we need to pick up points as quickly as we can."

Howe added: "Sometimes you can talk too much, so I'm pleased to get the football underway. Training has been good this week and I'm very pleased with the lads, so it's so far, so good."
