The supporters were great today

Legend Taylor was pleased with the point because it ensured his side were mathematically safe from the drop, not as though any of the bottom three were ever going to catch them, but admitted to being unimpressed by the long ball stuff his side played throughout the afternoon.

“We've guaranteed ourselves a place in the Championship for next season,” he said after the game. “That's probably what the target was for myself at the start of the season. I didn't think we could do anything better than that. I didn't think we could reach the play offs on the strength of what we had, so obviously I am delighted.”

He was far from pleased though with his side's performance against the Clarets. “I didn't think we tried to play,” he added. “We were happy just to let Boaz Myhill kick long balls and didn't take a lot of care with the service we gave to the strikers.

“For me, as we used to with Ben Burgess, we take liberties with Jon Parkin's size at times where you just knock it in because he's a big fella. But, if we knock more caring balls into him, he can certainly do more damage.

“So I thought the service to the strikers was poor, and I didn't think there were enough players who wanted enough of the ball. But as much as it was a disappointing performance, we have been much better better over the last half a dozen or so matches.”

He wasn't entirely happy with his groundstaff either and commenting on the pitch, he said, “I thought the pitch was very awkward. I asked for it to be watered and it looked as though it hadn't been, so I wasn't impressed with that.

“Overall it was a disappointing game and I'm sure if I was a paying customer I wouldn't be too impressed with the money I've just let go to watch us this afternoon.”

Steve Cotterill saw game number five without defeat, another step away from that awful run recently, and was most pleased with the defensive performance and a fourth clean sheet in five games.

“We had been unhappy with our goals against column but I think Michael Duff has done a good job since he has gone in at centre half and he has formed a good partnership with Frank Sinclair. And I thought that later on when John McGreal came on, he did equally well. Hull are a big side, and we had to make sure that we did well at set pieces and we did that.

“That's five games unbeaten now and that's a good run, but we still have three more games to come. If we can go eight unbeaten we will be delighted to take that into next year and we now have another game coming up very quickly against Crystal Palace that we need to start preparing for.”

He had a special word for the two young players in the side, Chris McCann and Kyle Lafferty. “They were really good today,” he said. “These two are youth team players. It is fantastic for them but it is still only a start. But they are good kids.”

The manager received a superb reception from the travelling support at the end of the game and he ended by repaying the compliment “The supporters were great today. They made themselves heard and I am delighted with them. I'm also delighted we got a result for them.”
