The stats would have blown the Sky machine up today

Karanka said: "It's a very good thing for us and I'm very proud of our players. We came from the last game playing with nine players with suspensions and with players coming in who haven't played for months, like Dani and Woody (Ayala and Woodgate), so I'm very happy to beat Burnley for the second time."

Speaking of his lack of available defenders, he added: "I needed to solve the problem. I felt today it as the best shape to start the game but after 60 or 70 minutes I needed to change to our normal shape, 4-3-2-1 like always, because they were attacking a lot.

"I'm pleased always with my players, well 90 per cent of the time, because since I came here they've played really well and all the things I explained to them they did on the pitch and that makes it easy for me.

"The most important thing is to win and we're winning in different ways. And for this I am happy because when I came we were conceding goals in those final minutes. Now we have to enjoy the week without a game.

"When your team doesn't play very well, because we didn't play well, but performs with the intensity and character we did today against a team like Burnley, you have to be happy.

"We had talked about our style because we knew how difficult it would be to play here against Burnley. For us it was perfect, although not for Burnley because they played really well and lost the game, but for us it was very good because we won the game."

Sean Dyche admitted being at a complete loss as to how to explain this second home defeat despite dominating the game and having 27 attempts at goal.

After the game he said: “We know the challenge of this division and we didn’t come here expecting a party, but I thought we were fantastic today. It was total domination and unfortunately a situation where things outside our control have affected the game.

“The stats would have blown the Sky machine up today and it is an anomaly how the ball doesn’t end up in their net. It’s a very poor goal we’ve conceded with two mistakes on the trot, but it’s just very difficult for me to speak because the officials made such a difference to the outcome of the game.

“There were at least two factual penalties not given. The ref has spoken to their players about not pulling shirts in the box, but when it happens with Danny Ings, he doesn’t give it. I asked him what was the point in speaking about that if you are not going to give them?

“There were others and we had two or three not given - and their keeper is the man of the match.

“It was total domination, but it’s not the first time decisions have gone against us this season and we’ve learned to grin and bear it. That’s nine (penalties) not given this season, but we know what we are about and we have performed fantastically well again today.

“There were so many positives and we never stopped searching for at least an equaliser. It’s about taking that into the next game now.”

With us still having an eight point lead over Derby, he added: "At the end of the day the reality is this. We have four games to go and we have an eight point lead and if someone had offered me that at the start of the season, we all would have taken it.

“The fans were giving the players a standing ovation when they went off because they have just seen their side absolutely destroy someone. They are aware sometimes the rub of the green and decisions make a difference, but they’ve seen their side give everything and they know, as I do, that you win games with performance levels like that over time.

“We know teams can’t withstand performances like that on a weekly basis.  We have four big games and if we keep playing like that we know we will turn teams over.”
