The consistency we are striving for is wins

Whilst Laws will be looking for that elusive first away win of the season, Boothroyd will want his team to arrest a run of three defeats and he said: "For us the last three games could be key on how we progress from here.

"If you analyse the games and the performances we've done more than well in a lot of the games. It's just consistency now and that will come with time.

"You sometimes get a slap in the face in football and we've just had three in a week so hopefully that can spur us on to good results in our next three games.

"I won't change my philosophy on how we approach games. You have to respect your opponent, not so much that you overdo it but make sure you have a game plan to beat them.

"Burnley are a mixed bag. They've got a strong squad that have kept their manager and I've got a lot of time for Brian Laws but with coming down from the Premier League with the parachute money there is an expectancy there but you do tend to get that.

"That being said, they are one of the favourites to go back up I'm sure. They've got a lot of guile, they will score goals and you underestimate them at your peril."

Boothroyd continued: "It's only November. In the long scheme of things we've only been together a short period of time and I will keep repeating that phrase 'work in progress' but if people keep their foot to the floor and try to be all they can be we will be alright.

"The spirit is high and the intention to do what is needed is there. The only thing missing at the moment is games so if we had another three games this week I actually think that would have been a good thing for the team."

Brian Laws is having to consider his starting line up, more so given the Ross Wallace's performance last week when he came on as a substitute.

"He certainly performed well and it's probably the biggest knock on the door you can ever give a manager," Said Laws. "I've had a selection headache from day one. That's the strength and the quality that we have. It's been an issue for me from the start, that there are decisions to be made.

"The players know when they come off the bench it's important for them to make an impact to, firstly, knock on the door of the manager and say 'I'm ready to do a job' and, secondly, it keeps everyone on their toes.

"So it's a win-win from my point of view because I've got a player who's focused and ready to come on and do a job, and also it's wakening everybody else up by saying they are ready for an opportunity which keeps the pressure on others to keep performing."

Looking ahead to the game, Laws said: "We are consistent in that we are very hard to beat and we are on a good run, but the consistency we are striving for is wins. That's something we have found a little bit difficult, but once you start on that road and you get back-to-back wins it does breed confidence and you go into the following game knowing you are on a good run.

"We go into Saturday's game knowing that we are drawing a lot of games away from home and it's only a matter of time before we turn it round and we are winning games. Our performances away from home have been top drawer. The only thing that hasn't been married with it is the three points which we would have deserved.

"It's only a matter of time before that changes for us. I've just said to the players to keep going the way they have been going and keep applying themselves in the right way, but above all else to keep concentrating for the 96 or 97 minutes or whatever it is."
