The changes didn't affect us one iota

“It was a hard game and it was made a bit harder in the beginning by my tactical gamble,” said Crewe boss Dario G. “We thought we might get something that we didn’t get, but it didn’t work and fortunately I changed things before it was too late.

“We looked more threatening after that and they were not really making any chances. Steve Jones took a good goal but overall he is finding it quite hard to remember what to do, he has gone back to his own instincts. I can’t blame him for that and we might have to use him sparingly at the moment.

“Their goal was a deflection, but it came from our thrown in. We are the worst team I have ever seen on throws and it is mostly down to the throwers. We will have to work on it.

“ I thought it was a fair result though and the league would say the same.”

Steve Cotterill pointed to the loss of light and said, “I don’t think stoppage helped us, I thought we were in the ascendancy and I thought we played some great football tonight. I thought we deserved to win the game as well.

“The big problem coming off was that we might pick up an injury because that is something we don’t want. We put them all in tops and bottoms straight away to keep their body temperatures up and that is the only thing you can do.

“When we restarted the game didn’t really get going again, it had lost its impetus.”

On the goal he added, “Granty has had some stick about not scoring but it was a good strike. I thought the midfielders were involved all night and I don’t know, but it will be interesting to see how many teams have come here to Crewe this season and kept the ball for as long as we did because the possession count tonight was ours.

“We were annoyed about their goal because there were a couple of things we talked about before the game and we know they potentially score their goals by breaking through the middle.”

He finally said that he left out Ian Moore and Gary Cahill to give them a break saying, “We have a few games coming up and the changes didn’t affect us one iota, I felt that with the personnel available we could change things and we haven’t been able to do that all season.

“We’ve flogged Mooro to death over the last few weeks and we all know what Gary Cahill has done for us. I’ve been dying to leave the kid out because he’s got a bit of a cold, a knock on his foot and a face full of cold sores. Other than that he’s a good looking lad. I wanted to give him a rest as well.”
