That encapsulates what we've been about

We were 2-0 up in under 13 minutes with both goals coming from Danny Ings and it left Stoke with a massive task for the remainder of the game. Hughes said: "The performance and the result was shaped by the events of the first fifteen minutes I would suggest.

"It doesn't matter who you are playing against, if you allow them to get a 2-0 head start before you even have a foothold on the game then it is inevitably going to be incredibly difficult.

"From that point on we were chasing the game. We were resorting to playing a little but frenetically towards the end and it all became a bit desperate to be honest. We are a better team than that to be perfectly honest and we needed to control the game better, especially during those opening ten or fifteen minutes.

"We saw in the performance last week that we were starting to show the command of Premier League games that we need to show on a regular basis if we are to progress. Today was disappointing for us, we were nowhere near those levels early on which was disappointing.

"We understand what has happened today and we need to learn from it. It can't keep on happening. There are reasons behind it, but it is making sure that we get back to work on Monday and improve because of this."

Dyche looked delighted when he came to salute the travelling Burnley fans at the end and that pride was bursting when he spoke after this first away win of the season.

He told the fans: "I said when I got here that they will always get a team who give everything for the shirt. Today, they have just given that again in the Premier League, and I am proud of that, make no mistake.

"There are things that people will know I hold dear. They are old fashioned values, but they have never been more relevant. Pride, passion, desire and will and all things that this team has in abundance. I have it, my staff have it and the players too and that was on show today."

He continued: "Sometimes you have to find a way of winning, no matter how that is and I thought our two goals were excellent. Stoke then gave a good account of themselves and came back at us with wave after wave, but the tactical framework and organisation were there in abundance to get us a nice win.

"Stoke are a well respected and experienced Premier League team, whereas we have a group that is developing and learning. We are having to work very hard for every inch of what we get, but we are willing to do that.

"We've not had the joy of going two goals up in the Premier League, so that's another learning curve. After that, could we hold the ball better? Yes. Could we pass better? Yes.

"Credit to Stoke because they came on strong with a freedom that being two goals down brings, because you have nothing to lose, but I will say that was a big performance from us and one that encapsulates what we've been about, what we are about and what we intend to be. All we need to do is keep adding in that quality, but that will come."

He added: "We said we wanted to make what has been deemed from the outside as the impossible possible, but we don't think that. I believe in the players and the way we work.

"We had a tough start to the season, and it will be tough again, but we didn't think we'd just roll into this league and roll out the victories. But the mentality of the group is good and if I were a Burnley fan, which I kind of am if you understand me, I'd be proud of that display today."
